Let's build some scoops!
Yup, it's amazing what you can knock together with an old washing up liquid bottle and some sticky-backed plastic, so why not take a break from building that Warhammer Blood Marine battle fortress and try some of these bad boys instead!?... Paul C. the US Distributor of Saxrax products takes us on a short guided tour, complete with pictures and plans so you can build some of these scoops too!...

(the following text/section was written/started back in '97 or '98 and added to from time to time)
PA SYSTEMS INTRO
Well here we are.....PA is short for 'Public Address System', and comes originally from army bases, and factories/plants etc, before the advent of amplified gigs & clubs.Incidently, just a bit of historical stuff here: The first amplified rock concert given in the UK was by Tommy Steele believe it or not !!....er....
PA systems can be as simple as a mixer going into a pair of powered speaker cabs, all the way up to sodding great 100.000 watt modular systems. Whatever the system, the end desired result is to get the sound to the listener at an even level wherever they are positioned in the venue.
Speaker cabinets are designed to provide the loudest and most balanced sound for a given amplifier input, and utilise different designs to do this depending on the cabinets intended job. Matching the speakers to the cabinet volume & resonance is one criteria, and cabinet design can cause the outgoing sound to be dispersed widely at a short distance for venues such as a small club, or to project the sound a long distance, such as when one wishes to project a sound to the center and back of a large concert hall or venue. Getting the right cabinet design & positioning makes all the difference.
SOUND DISPERSAL
Ok.... In a big venue, obviously the requirements for a PA sound system are going to be different to that of a system in a small club, even though the volume may actually be higher in the club in proportion to the system used by the large venue.
Above, is a picture of a typical large venue system. The main PA contains the Bass stacks... As you probably know, bass sounds are omni-directional, we dont really percieve them as coming from a directional source as much as higher frequencies... So the bass bins radiate bass out and around the venue....
The lower & upper mid-range stacks, and tweeter/treble units in the main PA are 'LONG-THROW'... designed to penetrate to the back of the hall as well as possible... but this can leave a dead spot around the center, so to re-inforce the signal at the back & center of the hall, overhead 'Flyers' of mid-range & treble/tweeter units are 'Flown' above the main PA angled downward... These units' cabinets and treble units are of a 'SHORT-THROW' design, and fill out the sound nicely, creating a reasonable balance throughout the venue !
For smaller live venues the main PA would be comprised of soley 'Short-Throw' units... Medium venues would be well covered by a mix of Long & Short-throw units.
On this picture, you can see a typical club efficient system....The bass-bins pump out bass to the floor, whilst the top end and mid-range is handled by 'Flown' units suspended around the dance-floor. Treble end frequencies are easily absorbed by soft matter such as humans !!... so by flying the top-end units above the floor angled downward, and then balancing the mix between Bass and Mid/Treble end with an active cross-over or graphic, you can keep the music crisp and pumping. I have to say, that this is an art not too difficult to achieve, yet it seems to elude alot of club owners..... The amount of times my friggin' ears get wrecked by over-the-top treble ended systems really shags me off.....which is why I'm usually dancing somewhere around the back or sides of the main dance-floor, or right up front with my head in the bass-bins....in fact, anywhere to escape the horrible sizzling, ear-frying treble !!
As I said above....Higher frequencies are more directional, and become more so the higher you go... The directional characteristics of a sound is known as the 'BEAM' as for a car head-light... and Tweeters are the most directional of all.
'Bullet' tweeters give great projection over distances, but have a very narrow conical 'Beam'... You can use 'Slot' Tweeters as an alternative, which give much greater width of dispersion, but don't carry the treble sound very far.
Horizontal dispersion with 'Bullet' tweeters (Conical H.F pattern 'Long-Throw')
Horizontal dispersion using 'Slot' tweeters (Broadbeam HF pattern 'Short-Throw')
DIFFERENT CABINETS-TYPES OR 'ENCLOSURES'
Ok... outside of the odd mega-complex design theories out there, most cabinets or 'Enclosures' fall into 3 basic types:
- SEALED BOX (infinate Baffle)
- TUNED REFLEX
- HORN LOADED
SEALED BOX / INFINATE BAFFLE
The simplest of all, being a straight.....er....sealed box !!....Just like your average hi-fi speaker. Because there is no way for the air behind the speaker to escape, this design offers the greatest 'damping' effect on the back of the speaker cone. This can be good to get the most out of the speakers power handling, but usually bottom end bass-response is lower than with other designs.... So to build a bassy sealed-unit requires a damned big box !!!
REFLEX ENCLOSURE
Ok.....these units add an open port or vent to allow air to escape from inside the box....The size of the port is critical to the 'Tuning' of the system. What you get with a reflex design, is greater bass from smaller box sizes, so this technique is often used by small hi-fi manufacturers to get some 'Oooomph' into the bottom end of their speakers.
HORN LOADED
These units are used for bass and bottom mid only, there are various designs such as the 'W' Bin......and they are all extremely complicated to design.....but basically, the inside of the cabinet contains chambers and tunnels, often combined with reverse mounted or angle-mounted drivers, designed to 'Throw' the bass out over distances. They are used where good high-frequency extended bass response and excellent directivity is required for large venues.
So... That's a few basics... To build up your own system, it's probably best to begin with 'Full-Range' modular cabinets... 'Full-Range' means the cabinets contain Bass, Mid & Treble speaker units, kinda like a massive hi-fi speaker... you can multiply these as you expand by simply lining them up side by side... All you need to go with the Left & Right cabs is a decent stereo power amp, say between 250 & 500 watts per channel, and your decks & mixer !!
If you want to expand further from there, you can add dedicated bass-bins, and switch to a 'Bi-Amped' system.
BI-AMP SYSTEM
Right... Bi-amping.... nope, it ain't an amp that likes to shag other amps of both genders!... It simply means you split the signal coming from the mixer into 2 frequency ranges..
Bass / Lower-mid & Upper-mid / - AND - Treble... simple huh?... Most hi-fi type & nearfield type speakers with a bass/mid & treble tweeter split off the treble to the tweeter at around 10K.....but how d'you do that?.... Well, you need to use a cross-over unit.
CROSS-OVERS
Ok... There are two types of cross-over - Passive & Active - both types split the incoming signal into component parts of different frequencies according to the units design and intended use. The cross-over allows the frequencies in a full-range incoming signal to be distributed to the correct type of speaker that can utilise the signal best by operating within it's intended bandwidth.
The other function of the cross-over, is to protect against speaker damage that can occur when low frequencies are fed to midrange & treble units.
PASSIVE
A passive cross-over, is the type as you have inside your hi-fi speakers. It is a bunch of electrical components mounted on a curcuit-board that need NO power supply.
ACTIVE
An active cross-over is an electronic device, (usually rack-mounting), which is connected between the mixer & power amps. The frequency spectrum is split before it is amplified, and each loudspeaker recieves it's own correct bandwidth of sound delivered by it's own dedicated amp.
Ok... Crossover points are to an extent determined by the speaker cabinet design, but are mainly influenced by the type and design of speakers used.... But here are the usual cross-over frequency ranges for the various typical system...
| 2 way system | bass to treble |
3 kHz - 5 kHz |
|
| 3 way system |
bass to mid mid to treble |
500 Hz - 1.5 kHz 3 kHz - 5 kHz |
|
| 4 way system |
bass to low-mid low-mid to mid mid to treble |
200 Hz - 400 Hz 800 Hz - 1.5 kHz 3 kHz - 5 kHz |
|
| super-tweeter | - | 5 kHz - 10 kHz |
ROLL YER OWN!
Oh yes!... Cos what you really want to know is...."How do I make one?"... correct?... Well, the cabinet plans at the top right of this page is some stuff just for you i scanned from an old Fane book I got at a car-boot sale for 50p... I have added a plan for a basic 'Full-Range' enclosure that can be used to build a cool system. All you have to do is build 2 of these babies to get off the ground... You can then upgrade by building another pair so you have 4 cabinets in total... One pair with a decent stereo power amp should be plenty fine for some serious party sounds, then just add more units... Each cabinet can be made from one sheet of 8' X 4' timber... So before you click for the plans, read this page about construction methods. I've done alot of wood & construction stuff, even a few studio's, the notes & construction tips are taken from my own woodworking experience based on looking at the plans.
Lastly I'd like to add... I'm not an acoustic's 'tech-bot'... These may not be 'State-of-The-Art' etc... 'latest design technology' etc... but that aint the essence of any TRUE 'Dance' music vibe to me... For me it ALL comes from squat-parties & warehouse-parties, house-parties, sounds, community-center jams, street-jams, small clubs etc etc... These boxes follow the fixed laws of acoustics well enuff for that scene... they just aint like for your Tina-Turner concert tho !!...
So I just thought these plans would be useful to bang up some boxes of a weekend for those kinda activities... When we were starting we had like some crappy 200 watt DJ-unit with speakers ting... big but crappy with an amp... we thought it was superb, you could blast anyones cheezy hi-fi away for parties, so you get asked to do parties endlessly!! :-) .. THAT is the whole flippin idea of having a little sound!... serious... some people start off at school or college with a few crappy but LOUD boxes they knocked up, and play parties after parties, and in a few years they are doing a club etc... Thinking back, I can remember the sound of that system we had... it was well off, and boxxy as hell !!, but it had BASS & THUMP!!... & it was loud!
Boxes like the ones in the plans on this page will make are a BIG step up from that sort of cheap 'disco' kit we used to play parties with... and in quantity, adding units together, these designs can fuel a decent sound just fine; well up to playing house-parties, smaller-clubs & warehouse gigs etc... and when you go to those sort of gigs this is the sort of boxes you hear :-)

If there is anyone out there who have built one of these scoops and maybe used EV DL15X drivers inside, can you let me know how it sounds... Please. I have two of these drivers lying around in my room. I'm dont want to spend the money to build the bins to find out that it sounds crap.

Hi hugo, Scoop bins, as you may already know, have 2 main peaks one around 40Hz and the other at around 120Hz. This is cos the driver is out of phase with the scoop. The hole in between can be up to -20dB in places so if you fancy boosting those frequencies to get a smoother response then go for it but i would much rather stick those nice EVs in a folded horn or reflex (i havnt got TS paramaters of that driver so i cant suggest which cab would be better). As to the scoops on this site i would suggest you steer clear of them. If anyone wants to make a reasonable sounding scoop bin then as iv suggested before go 2 speakerplans.com. I will admit im not a pro but i do have a passion for the best sound possible and frankly any scoop iv heard jus dont make the cut!
Best wishes
Stu

does this message thing really work?? anyways, i was wondering how much you think the starter set would cost to build, my calculations have lead me to belive they're gonna cost me £393.04 and that is before i've bought an amp. I thought they'd be cheaper and that price is using MDF and eminence drivers. Regards. Max

Would anyone like the plans for a compact bandpass bass cabinet i designed for the EMINENCE DELTA 12LF?
40-120Hz. Would be good for compact but loud bass guitar or small compact bass bin for PA. I dont usually like eminence but this driver is an exception to the rule seems to work wonders in any box! Email me if you're interested

Replying to Chandra Sekhar question:
The Stageline pro STA320 is a very cheap and nasty amp.If you want a good quality amp,for a low budget the Gemini range of X1,X2,X3,or XPM1800 are great
amps at a low cost,they feature.protection against dc,short,overheat,sub/ultasonic filters.
But better quality than that are QSC,CROWN,CREST,CARVIN,CHEVIN RESEARCH.
Your probably blowing up speakers because a. their under-powered,b your using a crap amp which clips, and c you should use a suitable fuse inline with the crossover or terminal plate.
As for speakers with built in protection
and don't feature fuses but resetable breakers instead.The Mackie c300 2 way 12 inch plus horn rated00w rms,cost £600 pair. 0r the Mackie c400 2 way 15 inch plus horn rated 400w rms,cost £800
pair.Apart from that i can't help you, until, you tell me what speakers you blew up,the wattage, the make of the drivers.

Thanx, Stu. The DL15X's are actually fullrange drivers, but delivers such a lot of punchy bass... I downloaded the DL ranges cabinet design handbook thing and they do say that you can use it in a reflex bin... Anyway, I have already started building cabs for them. 90L boxes - two way desing. I live in South-Africa and have only seen one or two scoops standing around at places, have never heard any... Thats why i asked, but thanx for the advice!

I'm in a band, and we're gettin pretty good these days and are about to invest in a pa system!
Well we're opting for the HK Elias 1.2k system. There is some difference of opinion however regarding how many people it will cater for well. Some say 250 and some say more like 100.
Could sombody please tell me the real answer?!
Greatly appreciated :@)

Replying to TG Jasper question:
1. use high power bass drivers in scoop bass bins min00w rms, ideally 1000w rms Eminence Kilomax 18 inch sounds the best, from my experience.
2. look for low resonant freq,eg. 28 hz
3.very low freq responce/range of 20hz,if not possible min5hz,Eminence Omega 18 is 25 hz-2khz
4. large voice coil, 4 inch ideal
5. big heavy magnet say or 56 0z ceramic or over 20 oz rare earth[cobalt]
6. X mech being 27mm the min[x mech = maximum linear excersion] until the speaker cone gets damaged.
7. high spl[sound pressure level] the more volume at a given output.Say 95 db at 1w/1m,but i've got the Eminence Kappa pro lf,rated 400w rms,and spl of 1w/1m = 103 db,maximum spl 140 db.
8. quality of materials,JBL is better quality than Eminence, but something like EV[Electro Voice]is even better than JBL.
If you want the best driver ever,go to www.precision-devices.com they do a 2000w rms[2kw rms] 24 inch diametre subbass driver, with a freq of 15hz-600hz.Also check out www.live-audio.com
www.pispeakers.com www.speakerplans.com.

Trying to answer a few questions at once. For all the people who want folded horns goto www.speakerplans.com they have plans for compact bass horns which chuck out a whole lotta bass when loaded with the right drivers. secondly for dave the bass player who wants 33Hz at ful SPL id go for either a bandpass enclosure or a reflex loaded with a beyma 21". Again look on speakerplans for the bandpass design (184 sub). Id usually recommend Precision Devices for bass but the 21" PD doesnt work as well in a reflex as the beyma 21" does. Finally to the person who wants better sound from either a full range or bi amped system ive never had any problem with muddy sound when using a full range enclosure. May i suggest you try a different enclosure i find a single 15 and compression driver works well with about 400w a side for a smallish venue. 2 x 15 + horn CAN sound a bit muddy. Also try using a bigger rig for the bass player onstage if you can, meaning you have to put less bass through the main PA. You should get a better sound that way. One other tip is use good drivers with strong magnets like PDs and Beyma and try not to use Eminence if you can help it. Eminence are ok if you're going to underpower them but at the most only put their rated value through them or they wont last very long.
Good luck
Stu

Hi if anyone is thinking of building any speaker cabinets and you need to work out the volume of the box you will need, take a look at
http://www.linearteam.dk
they have a program called winisd which will calculate sealed, reflex, or bandpass boxes, particularly useful when building bass bins! Just punch in the TS parameters of the speaker or select 1 from the database and youre away! Best part is its free!

I think the site is o.k, but the designs are now very dated! some of the designs will never die as they are fundamentaly correct designs. However, cabs such as the rear folded horns, scoops and horn loaded mid-high packs have advanced greatly. I have a web-site under construction at present, soon to be available to all, in the mean time, for the latest designs, e-mail me and you will not look back!!

Why the swearing? You are putting off customers who just want to buy good quality stuff at a reasonable price! There's just no need for it.

i built a pair of full range reflex cabs loaded with some twin cone 12" emience Beta 12LT drivers. I now want to expand my system by biulding some simple 15" bass reflex bass bins and maybe some simple horn boxes for the top end. Does anyone know of any better designs to build for simple bass bins, bearing in mind i hope to add 18" scoop bins in the future. Cheers.

I have an SWR410 bass cab. I changed it from rear ported (5"x5"deep), plugged it up air tight, took the horn out & ported the front (3.5" hole), port tapers to 3" on the inside extending" inside. To get the most effeciency, how deep into the cabinet should the new port extend into cabinet? If I cut the hole to 4", how deep should a 4" port extend into the cab? Would a 4" port give more volume, bass...? I want the bass to extend into the audience as far as possible when not running thru the mains. CAB DEMENSIONS: 23"x23"x18"d. Can't do"x5" in front, speakers to close together. Any info you have to make this cab perform it's best would be greatly appreciated!

I love the look of your equipment. I play in a band on a very small island in the South Atlantic Ocean. St. Helena. I really need a small PA System for PUB use. I take no money for playing. How cheap can I get one?
Thanks. Tony Leo.

I dont think I have ever really driven them to capacity. The nice thing about the push pull iso-baric design is that it halves the size of the enclosure.
Isobariks are -3db efficiency too dont forget

Hi,
I have developed an audio player for my autistic son. He is very good with music and now I want to build him a complete DJ set. For the speakers I would prefer the 2 X5" FULL-RANGE MODULAR CABINET that you propose on this site. Because I am a hobbyist and do not know a lot of speaker systems, I apreciate your advise for the brands and description of the speakers and wich pre-build cross over I can use.
Many thanks, and you can always look at my program on www.swakke.com

I must have been asleep at the switch earlier today. I told you about a pair of ported band pass subs. Well they are an iso-baric push pull pair.Totally sealed off but for the ports. One is wired reverse of the other, on opposite sides of the baffle.600 watts, rms. I dont think I have ever really driven them to capacity. The nice thing about the push pull iso-baric design is that it halves the size of the enclosure. The box is only just wide and long enough to enclose the 2-12s.
15.5wide x 27.5long x 18.5deep.Outside dimensions.
Incredible bottom end from small boxes.

Great site. I was reading Ishtek, and realised how poorly my hard earned JBL and Eminence speakers were performing in the ported reflex bins I had made.I want new bins by the spring, and with all the browseing that I have done, exponential horns are the way to go.I run 4 altec 808-8a tops, ported band pass subs(I made), the low mid bass was getting lost in the crowd. I have learned a lot from a few great sites on the internet, yours being one.

I have some high quality custom built cabs for sale. They are 13 laminate ply and are loaded with 2 Eminence Beta 10s (250W each) and a CTS Powerline Tweeter Driver (400W) on a 10"x4" Horn. Power Handling is 400W into 4ohms. Really fantastic clean balanced sound would be great for solo gigs or mid/top in a band PA. Only used the cabs twice. Selling because, ever the perfectionist, i have already upgraded my system. The cost to build these was over £500 as they are still AS NEW the selling price is a meagre £300 check out www.darlingaudio.tk for pictures
Thanks!

Having built several sound systems now i can share with you my construction tips and findings! When you start try not to cut corners cos you'll end up paying for it later. Spend the money and buy all the right bits and you wont ever have to rebuild or touch up your cabs. I have hopefully budgeted everything that you will need using trusty maplin to supply all the bits you can get it cheaper in other places if you search tho. On top of all your Speaker Drivers, Compression Drivers/Tweeters, Wood and Crossovers you will need: -
Speaker Grilles between £1.99-£4.99 each
Speaker Grille Clamps £1.99 for 4
Corners - the plastic interlocking type work best and it means you dont need feet on your cabinets aswell £3.99 for 4
Handles - relative for the size of cabinet the metal sprung recessed handles i find best 99p-£5.99 each
Cabinet Covering - Either paint or speaker box covering carpet or buffalo hyde finishes £Variable
Cabinet input connecter - Jack or Speakon £2ish each
Castors - On bass bins or heavy cabinets £14.99 for 2
Speaker Cab Top hat - For speakers which sit on stands £7.99 each
Loudspeaker Cabinet Wadding - This goes inside the cabs to deaden the resonances inside the box for bass bins attach to the rear wall top and both sidewalls. For Fullrange Cabs or Mid Tops just the rear wall is adequate £1.99 for 1/2m length
Wiring - Good old mains cable is fine and especially good if you run your amps into 2ohm loads as it handles the high current that is produced in these situations
Bolts and Tee nuts to hold the speakers and speaker grilles on around £15
Glue and Screws - need i explain what these are for? £20-30
I think ive covered everything add up all the figures and add them to the price of your existing components and you will have a total estimate for the project. Good Luck
Stuart

I am really impressed that someone would spend the time to design and then post on the net speaker systems. So I would like to know, if you were going to pick just one of these to build for home stereo system in a large room , which one(s) would you build? And what kind of speaker brand(s) do you recommend? Where to buy them?
Thanks for your help.

right, I just made a pair of 2 x 12" bass cabinets. Each driver has a 300w rms rating and they are parallel wired.
- Would the maximum overall input power be 300w rms or 600w rms? I really need a quick response as I have to buy an amp soon. Thanx for the great site, has been very useful. Patrick.A

Replying to Graham's question:
you said you wanted 2k more a side.
Then go to www.eminence-speaker.com
and look at the Eminence Kilomax 15 0r 18,they are both rated 1000w rms each,4 inch voice coil,heatsink,109 oz magnet.
For more pro sites go to www.live-audio.com and also www.pispeakers.com,and for building your own speaker cabinet,go to www.speakerplans.com
Using 2 Eminence kilomax 18= 2kw rms, driven by a poweramp at least 2000w rms,but it sounds cleaner with a 4000w rms.Not less than 2kw rms for 2kw rms speakers, otherwise the amp will clip, and damage the speakers.
Crown,QSC,Crest,Chevin Research,Carvin
all do a wide range of amps, from budget to mega powerful and mega expensive[example the 10kw rms per channel amp from Crest costs £9000
If your on a budget, get either Gemini xpm series or QSC amps, because they range from £200-£1000
One last thing to say,get scoop bass bins,or double scoops, more output and bass than vented reflex bins.

you should add the designs for folded horns (like the w-fold you eluded to). They're really not that hard to build provided you have financial resources for the materials and the power amps to drive them.

GREAT RESOURCE SITE!
My wishlist: longthrow lo-end cabs, 112 & 212 longthrow mid horn cabs, trapizoidal subs... etc.
While the plans listed here are great, there are merely boxes and very easy to build (as noted) so it would be nice to see some advanced cabs.
Regardless, this is an excellent resource!! Keep up the great work!!

I have 2 15" JBL (150 W) speakers. I would like to construct a cabinet which sets on a tripod stand.
I've been told that the cabinet must be of sufficient size, due to the amount of air flow produced by these speakers. what is the best recomentation.
