Here's a 2 X 15" folded bass-bin cabinet, Ideal for club and party systems.... Use this with Mid-High cabs.

Ok... Not so simple this one, but... This is a 'Short-Throw' bass-cab, and thus ideal for a club/party sound, where you want good radiating bass... There are other designs, such as W-bins, but they are generaly Long-Throw.

You'd better be good with a saw, and get yourself a mitre-form cos you need to cut alot of mitred joints, and they need to be accurate.... Still, for a few bucks/squids, the wood-shop should assist you if you present them with the plan.

At first the plan does look a bit hair-raising, but start to visually strip it down, and it gets clearer.... The best way to do it, is to cut out the side panels, then do all the measurements on the inside edge of the two sides, and mark it out with pencil.

Next, get all the inner panels, and sit them on the drawn out lines/plan.

Do plenty of dry runs, (putting in the center pieces, then lowering the other side panel onto the top, without glue or screws to check all the joints).....Again, the mitre-ing (cutting of angled joints) needs to be spot-on... You can't have loads of gaps everywhere.

You'll see 2 small pieces labelled - "Bracing Stuts on CL" on the plans.... these are to re-inforce the first two angled inner-panels at their center point ......these struts should be right on the center-line, made from planed baton...The two final inner-panels holding the speaker units are naturally re-inforced at the center by their connection at the angle of convergence (er... where the ends meet).

All the inner, top, front and rear panels are of course, the width of the inner-cabinet width dimension....basically, everything is contained within the two side panels..... It seems a bit weird, but once the sides are screwed into these pieces, it will all come together.

This cab has a removable back panel so you can get at the speaker units... it's a little unclear from the plan, but, the inner-lip runs all the way round the opening.... The final back-panel fits in flush with the back of the cab...

DO NOT use chipboard for this cab... use PLY or MDF.

You can build another pair, and add them together with the first pair for more power.... If you do this, you get an even lower bass response, down to 38Hz... just make sure of the impedences, and the way you wire it.

The speaker brand is up to you. Check with the supplier for cross-over if used in a passive system..... It should be rated at 500Hz.

LOUDSPEAKERS 2 X 15" BASS
CROSSOVER BASS - MID @ 500 HZ
PERFORMANCE From 55 Hz, up to 500 Hz, at a sensitivity of 103 db of high power fundamental bass
CONSTRUCTION Very complexed. mark out the side panels as section 'XX' to aid construction.
Panels need to be mitred accurately
MATERIALS 2 and 1/2 sheets of 18mm / 3/4" 8' X 4' board (2438 X 1219)

Nice page. Lots of people are looking for plans. How about plans for the old JBL "15 inch scoop" ? Good low end from the folded horn + good mid from the direct radiation of the front of the speaker. (rear of speaker feeds the horn). This is also one of the smoothest sounding horn designs that I've heard +its by far the easiest to build bar none. I have these plans if your interested.

would like to add some W-boxes for outdoor use.

Another thing, how can I download the pages

including the illustrations?

Thanks and regards!

I like the look of theses cabs but would it be possible to add a couple of small mid/high frequency horns in the flat panel in the middle to give a full range PA cab? Or do you have any plans for a compact full range folded horn cab?

The cab. here interests me. Have been working with PA

systems for years. As an sound engineer but most of

design, repair work. The 500hz x-over is to high. Something

between 100-200 hz. would be better. If W-horns are driven

that high in fr.they will typically do some 200hz+ midbass hum. 12"

speakers would be good up to 800hz if you have 2inch hf

drivers or 12-500 if you have 1inch drivers.

Best regards

I am very impressed with the detail of the design. I have been looking for the actual design of a single 18 W-bin for the longest while. I know there are two different basic types. The one that Sonic uses, and the one EAW uses. If you have any plans for these or any tips they would be greatly appreciated.

Human hearing: 20 Hz to 20 KHz more or less.

Plans above talk about "down to 38 KHz" and

"It should be rated at 500 KHz."

The plans for the folded horn bass cabinet are almost identical to a cabinet that RCA used in movie theaters in the 40s.

I aquaried one of these and modified it. It had one 12" speaker in it. I took the 12 out and put 2 15" in.

I am very happy with the bass out of the front and it souns great with music. The problem is the sound out of the back

when it is being used for PA. The cones face the front. Should the back be Stuffed with absorbing materal or just sealed??????

Any input would be appreciated.. Odus

yeah i know, the problem is with pa on the www, it's full of old fart smart-asses who never contribute shit on the www, who dont have a clue about ruffcut playouts for dance music, and they sit there and bang on about 'more efficiency' etc... I guess they were never young, never owned a small 'disco' pa no matter how crappy, and never had the buzz of getting out there and banging some tunes for a party or whatever - they just dont get it. They've obviously NEVER been out raving to a dub/dancehall PA with home-made boxes etc etc & their attitude is akin to those stereotypical nightmare 'hi-fi' salesmen made famous by TV comedy pisstakes.

anyways, you can carry on 'carping', but how about CONTRIBUTING!!! - If you know so much send some plans in and we'll post them up or start a site yourself - whatever...

Built two of these bad boys. First one was built with 3/4 plywood and Eminence OMEGA PRO-15A's. Second built with MDF and KAPPA PRO-15LF's. MDF makes the cab really heavy (2 people to unload the bin from the trailer). Both powered with RMX-1450's in bridge mode LP at 110Hz - HP at 30Hz. Could actually power with the 1850 if you know what your doing. Been hammering these cabs for 2 years now without damage (to the cabs!). Make sure you build these things tight, or you will destroy your cabinet. Really like the cabs! Good LF extension in my PA! Thinking about cutting the plans in half so I can handle the beast with one person! Have pictures if interested! Thanks for the website, Ken.

My cutting skills aren't professional and the cab has very small gaps in some mitre joints. Can I use a silicon sealant to be sure the cab will be air tight in all joints?

I built this sub bin out of 3/4" birch ply with the help of a local woodshop that did the cuts. First I coverted to inches and drew an actual size layout to physically calculate the angles. I modified the back to accomodate the large magnets on the speakers. I got a couple of 8ohm 400W 15's from MCM at $100 each. I'm using an 800W Crown amp bridged to mono 4ohm. I'm getting better sound than foljs with larger amps and more expensive speakers. I left the finish the natural birch for now with several coats of poly. Maybe when it looks a little road weary I'll paint it. This was one of the most difficult wood prodjects I've ever done...lots of weird angles. I'm very satisfied with the results.

Build a set for my drive-inn. Used two chinese 15" woofers (GBS) each00 Watts RMS.

You have to be good with you hands to build them.

But once build . . . . . .

I drive them with a t.amp 2400 (2 x 1200 Watts RMS in 4 ohms)

The low is earth shaking deep and incredible loud. I just couldn't believe my ears. Did I build this ?

All these plans are in the market for years. I personaly got an eminence book full of them. acoustic rules have not changed. It was great in the0s, it is still excelent today. But be aware that not all drivers can handle this properly. Low QTS and long excursion. Round all angles on the pasth to optmize flow...

Cabinet is similar to RCA type Shearer 'W' box. I own 2 of them. They even have the mounting holes drillid for the bass extention wings that was to be used with the baffle. I also have 1 of the RCA 'ubangi' bass bins. Design is from 1943 radial design to use the back wave of the horn which was not used in the 'W' type cabinet. Keep up the good work with your box and your site!

Good stuff . . I'm looking for a design that uses a single 15" driver for bass guitar use with good performance around 40 to 200 Hz. Is that asking too much? Can't be the size of an Elephant either, perhaps that's definately is asking too much.

Has anyone heard of the CONCORD BINS that kosmic sound made in the early 80s..west australia.. they had 15s on their side with a curve ..then 12 inch speakers for the higher range.. 1200 watts /cabenet..I saw Black sabath useing them..10 a side..great sound..

my fault. I should have redesign it on computer. My 2 B&C 15" bass do not fit inside. I guess the 171mm depth of this driver is too much. What driver did you succesfully setup inside this bin?

Awesome cabinet, I used one of these on a club tour with an 8 - 10" Ampeg cabinet and it was a perfect combination for lows and highs in smaller spaces.

And when I was in larger venues, I'd just crank up the Ampeg SVT Bass Amp to where ever it needed to go.

I have four 18" Eminence Kilomax speakers (8ohms each, 1,250 watts each)that I'd like to use to put inside two long throw bass bins (horn type). Do you have any plans for cabinets that would work? Please also email me at scott@scottcarlisle.com

this speaker was a lil tricky to build...after figuring the miter cuts it was a breeze to put together... with the help of a nail gun... did not want to use a lot of wood so it was scaled down in hieght and added 4 inches to its lenghts.. took 7 2x4x3/4 sheets to build ....only built one ...i used a 450 watt per side amp to test with two vega woofers....awsome sound the sub was so hard hitting and clear it put a smile on my face.....cant wait to crank up the table saw for second one ...keep up the good work

The design is not clear. It should not be a consolidated one and should be broked down into different stages.

Please send me the design for a single 18''bass bin (W design)at your earliest.

I built one of these bass bin 25 years ago for the baas player in a rock band. If constructed correctly it will give the user solid rib busting bass. At high volumes in small venues it can even make you feel alittle sick. The draw backs are it only usable up to about 300Hz so you need a Mid-Top cab. Also even constructed in ply their heavy in MDF you need a big fit roady. If your using this cab at high sound presure level you may find it useful to fix some ribs to the removeable back to damp out cabinet vibration. Take your time in the construction and you will be rewarded.

Excellent plans, I have a set and always wanted to add another pair...now I can. Well presented!

Does anyone know where I can find plans for Void Looney bins? I heard some at the Notting Hill carnival in the UK a few years ago and want a set, but South Africa has no suppliers so I have to build it myself, and import the 1000W drivers from the Void Acoustics in the UK. Please help … anyone..

I have a folded horn box with one 15". It looks similar to this but without the center bracing. It is old and falling apart and I want to build two to replace it. The application is outdoor bass. Can this plan be adapted/simplified (for dummies) for a single 15 wwithout the bracing? The sub that I fill it will probably be 400 watts.

Hey I have seen these hacked in half a couple times before. Is this a legal operation to do with this cabinet or am i just gonna be wasting my time?

I have 2 mid-hi cab's with Gauss woofers and JBL horn drivers that I want to add more bass to. I figures take this design, cut it in half and put one piece on each cab. Thanks!

This is a direct copy of the fane loudspeaker design handbook. Just harder to read.

But it's a good cabinet, even if you didn't design it.
