D dorian is:
D E F G A B C D
D minor (natural minor) is:
D E F G A Bb C D
Do you understand what a mode is? Simply put, a mode is just its' relative major scale started on a different note. D dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian and B Locrian are all modes of C major. So, D dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian (natural Minor) and B Locrian are all made up of the same notes (the notes of the C scale), just started on different degrees. E Phrygian is a C major scale "started on" E:
E F G A B C D E
D minor isn't relative to C. To find out relative minor scales look at the 6th degree of a major scale (A, in the case of C). To find relative major scales, look at the 3rd degree of the minor scale (F, in the case of D min).
Hope this was educational (and correct)
