why anyone would continue to use this arcaic box of garbage is beyond me. yes, i'm bitter, i just started using one a couple months ago and last night i lost EVERYTHING! you can't even back your data up properly. recording pings onto a tape recorded or HD. what is that all about. sure, it was great 30 years ago maybe but there surely must be something better now right?

the main reason i started using it was so that i would not have to stop and start between tracks. i want to have a continuos non stop thing going on. can you do this on an mpc?

basically, this is what i want the sequencer to do:

1. controll midi
2. be able to play an entire set (at least 1 hour) without having to stop and start
3. it would be great to find one that could record onthe fly

any suggestions? i'd even consider a laptop if these ideas where worked out. please help!

yam qx21 sucks as well!

properly?   used to write all my shit down on paper.. here's some real shit tho (shit shit shit) i have this old coco computer.. 20+ years old.. something's blown so it takes 1/2 hour to 'warm up' when you turn it on. dood.. it will *still* load from tape.. (voice synth.. yum) the same tape!! i'd be scared of a floppy 1/4 it's age..

okay. old timer mode fin. get two :p been ages since i used my q80.. no clue under what conditions it switches songs well.

i actually have 2 mmt8s...but backing up is too much effort to be practicle. writing it down on paper isn't a bad idea though. the last time my roommates mmt8 crashed b4 a show he rewrote everything into it in the few hours b4 showtime. and it was a good show. still, that sounds like crazy talk to me. surely there must be a better alternative?

i've heard lots of nasty rumors that the rm1x glitches and is not solid when transitioning between songs. are you playing continuously with it? and are you using external midi with it?

i've been told the MPC sequencers allow record-during-play (specifically the asq10 was the object discussed), but i've never used one personally.

the rs7000 reportedly can now do this as well...

The Rm1x only glitches when trigger the internal synth when you change from song to song. It's sequencer is rock solid and works great with external gear. Ideally you want 2 sequencers..

makes for smoother transitions if you use all 16 tracks of the sequencer. So that you don't just jump from track to track (too many FLEM's do this, IMO). With 2 you can control seperate pieces of gear and have seemless transitions...

hey jp..is the MMT8 the only sequencer you have?

you do have your PC....and odds are you could obtain a soft sequencer

you COULD dump all the data of the MMT that way...a full sysex dump.

of course...no good to load back up on stage..sorry...my bad

qx3? tell me more! please.

influx, i have a mac but the mmt8 isn't a sysex thing. you have to record from tape out...recording these archaic ping of information...and then play this audio back into the tape in of the mmt8. at the moment, i would rather not try playing live if this is what i have to go through. it's just unacceptable.

what i would rather do is find a sequencer that does the job. but i am finding that that is a difficult task.

qx3? never even heard of it. time for a search.

sorry man, but...read your manual. Ive DONE total dumps to another sequencer. I know it uses tape, but you can do it my way, too. and its VERY quick

yeah, alesis made the 'mididisk' or something as i recall, it was basically a sysex recorder and a disk drive, and i know of at least one person that had an mmt8 + mididisk and would send his patterns to the mididisk via sysex and then save them on disk there. not as quick as an internal disk drive, but just as effective.

ironically a q80ex, with its 64K sysex recording ability, might also work here (receive sysex, save to disk)... i dunna remember if the regular q80 does this too...

influx, no appologies necessary. if it is possible to do sysex dumps i will be thrilled! that would totally change my mind about using the mmt8. the question is though, do i need to to have the alesis datadisk or can i dump to another medium...storing it as a file in logic or something? i will read my manual when i get home...and i'll do it with a bit more encouragement. thanks!

influx, thanks again. if you hadn't said you've done sysex i would have thrown my mmt8 in the trash. now, not only does it seem viable to backup my songs...but i can load midi sequences from logic via sysex. i'm again excited to work on a live set!

from my search today i found the following from http://www.mmt8.com

How can I use a computer to backup my parts and songs?
How do I get sysex data in and out of my MMT-8?
If your computer has a MIDI interface, then you can store the entire contents of your MMT-8s memory on the computer's hard drive via sysex. Sysex is simply control information that can be sent through MIDI cables; in this case, the MMT-8 uses sysex to dump its memory. The memory files can be sent back to the MMT-8 in a similar fashion.

Here is a 'how-to' using Alesis' Freeloader software. Most computer-based sequencers will allow you to receive and send sysex.

Can I convert MMT-8 sysex files to and from MIDI files?
Yes. Pete Kvitek's MMT-8 Exchange will let you do exactly that, and has many other useful functions. The software costs $19.95.

Alternatively, you could look at Giebler Enterprise's MMT-8 Sequencer Conversion Software, which is more expensive and hasn't got a nice Windows interface.

oh, i am the worse. but i'm sure you can all relate. gear addiction. ebay addiction. i just bought an Alesis DataDisk SQ MIDI data storage thingy. when will i learn? i need to stop eating ramen noodles. i know the sq ain't that expensive...but it all adds up. i get about a record a day in the mail from ebay. when will i learn?

why do you need a data disk tho if youre gonna store in logic or whatever

can I say "I told you so?"

I do know somethings

never can tell when the mmt8's gonna take a shit on you. i've heard too many horror stories. the data disk is for gigging. i don't have a laptop and don't plan on bringing a computer to a gig. so i need some immediate way of restoring. of course, that's all off in the future. i'm not even close to doing a live gig. but when i do...

and then, i may have also bought the data disk for overkill. after loosing all my work for the last 3 and 1/2 months i do not want that to happen again. also, the data disk will store midi files and not just sysex. plus it supposidly loads quickly.

maybe my crash was a good thing. better at home now rather than live. and i wouldn't have found out all this extreemly important info from you influx had the crash not happened.

very good. learning from your mistakes is important. And backup overkill is a better than underkill. don't lose sleep thinking you're a gear slut

i'll second the yamaha qx-3. step recording, two midi outs, 16 tracks, and it has a built-in datadisk recorder for saving sysex dumps from other synths, etc. all is saved to floppy for easy handling. you can save each song as a sequence, then chain them in any order, saving your whole set on floppy. really though, i've found almost no info for it on the net. they can be had for pretty cheap if you can find one. also, this only goes for the qx-3, i think all the other qx are junk...

the only review i could find on the net bemoaned a lack of looping ability.. is there a workaround? (i.e could you possibly chain a song to itself? or what?)..

sort of looking for a cheapish h/w midi seq.. the only problem is that if it can't loop, that kind of sucks..

oh well.

I own a Kawai q-80exe that I bought from sweetwater a few years ago. I don't think they ever advertised it in their catalogues, but they may still have some. I love mine, but mainly use it for live gigs so I'm not sure about all it's bells and whistles. You can do live, step, and punch in recordings, and their site mentions:

"An entire "set" of songs can be programmed for instant access in the "Chain-Play" mode."

It's pretty rock solid and also retains all uploaded data even after powering down. The main complaint I read is the fact that only 8 channel mute buttons are available at once (you have to scroll down different rows to mute channels 9-32). Hope this helps.

The Data Disk should serve you well. Duo Electro has one which we keep mounted in the rack, and we've had to use it before a live gig at least once or twice. Static shocks tend to be what wipe out the mmt8 memory. Everyone I know who uses mmt8s, myself included, has experienced this initial wipeout and then they adopt a backup method, cos it's still a really good simple sequencer to use live.
