The NL3 is a totally different beast. It's an analog implementation of an FM synth, basically. It includes seperate sync oscillators per main osc, I believe a sub-osc, effects, and those trippy lighted knobs. It doesn't sound all that much like the NL1/2.

PS - I've seen NL2 racks for $899. That's not expensive. The only shit that's crazy priced is the stuff you can't get from any ofther synth - the Modular and the NL3.

I use a Sony DPS-V55 for effects live, and use plug-ins in the studio, or the efects in my 01V.
Good ones on a budget? I'd say the TC M-One.

I use that one and it is really great sounding but not much controll (slimed down version of M-one controll, but the same sound)

It has been in my friends studio for years, and the only time it was ever played was by me, b/c I would drool at the thing everytime I visited.
He finally said to me "You know...You've used this more than I ever have...if you want it, make me an offer..." so I emptied the cash in my wallet, and ran home as fast as I could.
