I'm seeing the Nord Micro Modular for sale at Novamusik for $295US. What's up with that? Is this a good deal or what?

I got my modular there for $999, and now I think they're down to $859. Cheap plug, I'm selling my dead mint, barely used Nord Modular with case - asking $800.

good deal for a new one, just remember you'll need to dedicate 1 midi in and out to the bugger just to program it via the editor

Dude, it is seriously as new. I have the original box, manuals, software CD, and probably even the plastic bag that covered the synth in the original package. It's never been off my desk.

And as always with new gear, an asking price is just a starting point for negotiation.

Well, you see, I won a prize at work ($500) and I'm going to do something I've never been guilty of, and that is be a gear whore. So, I'm thinking of adding something to the kitlist. Tops on the list are some sort of VA type old synth, or a used bass guitar. Unfortunately, I know NOTHING about bass guitars (does Alvarez make good cheap bass guitar?). So. Any advice? I've always lusted after a Prophecy. I could sell my k2000 and get a k2000r, and then add a prochecy with the proceeds (I don't have enough space for 2 keyboards). Or, I could get a Virus A rack. Or a used Jomox X-base or something silly (granted the Jomox is a little more than $500). Any ideas?

I'm really liking a real bass guitar though. I have as much skill playing a bass guitar as any 6 string guitar player has...

I think my biggest hole is drums sounds. That's why I like the idea of the Jomox. I also have trouble getting the "right" bass sometimes. I can get plenty of good bass, but sometimes you need a could accoustic style bass line, you know? Get it really rolling...

Anyhow, I have a pretty good selelction of sounds. Analog modelling (DarkStar), analog (DSI), wavetable (XT), sample/rom (k2000). The only thing missing really is subtractive like an FS1R, or something like that, or a true VA like a Virus. I don't know - I'm open to ideas. This money fell into my lap so I'm thinking it would be fun to get something I normally wouldn't buy. And don't suggest radiation treatment. ;-)

dont mean to jerk your chain but you better check your info on the FS1R...

as for what Id suggest?

you already have enough synths, man, and you should be able to get ANY sound out of those...

except a true real bass sound  get an old P-Bass

if you do go the non-drum route, i'd say definately go for the bass guitar... sometimes there's just nothing like a real bass groove with that human touch.

I've got an old Ibenez bass. Doesn't sound too bad, and it's not screwed together too badly either.

If you're looking for drum synths, make sure you check out the Waldorf Attack. NovaMusik has 'em for $549 and I'm loving mine.

You're absolutely right about the FS1R. I was thinking FM and I typed subtractive. Sorry about that.

I'm really leaning in the bass direction. I was planning on plugging either directly into the board, or I could go through a ToneFactory as a DI. Also have a RNC for compression. Anyhow, a good friend recommended Fender basses - the precision bass (according to him) has quieter electronics so it would be better for recording. Ultimately, that's the thing I am most interested in - the pickups on my Peavey 6 string (otherwise a REALLY nice guitar) are loud when around ANYTHING electrical. A 9volt battery throws it off.

Anyhow. I'm not really hurting for synthesis, but something that does good kickdrums is important. I don't do well programming my synths for percussives, unfortunately.

DZ...plugging your bass directly into your board aint gonna do ya so good, but the tone factory will, DEFINITELY sound good on bass

as for percussion, well...since youre so paranoid about software...youre missing out on a world of possibility, even if its just sample creation to dump in your ESI

I know what you're saying Dave, but you know my experience with computers and software. NOTHING goes smoothly for me. I'm just excited that my OS is stable (knock on wood), Sonar and Sound Forge are kinda running together (although for some reason I can't use any SF plugs in Sonar and vice versa. Adding another layer in there just makes me more worried.

Hmmmm. That's news to me. Don't know why I shouldn't be able to use them. I'll have to look into that.

Anyhow - a brand new Fender Bass is on it's way. Can't wait. Heh-heh. What Def Z song masqurading as a dnb track is complete without a little electric bass guitar rolling in the back? ;-)

no, SF plugs are regular DX and should work in Sonar (or at least they did for me when I had them installed on the system)

It's weird - with SF6.0, they worked fine. As soon as I installed 7.0, I started having problems. I have since reinstalled, AND added their latest patch.

I've always had problems using Sonic Foundry effects in Sonar. When I upgraded to Sonar3 I was able to get most of them working, but there are a few that still behave oddly. I think quite a few other people have had problems as well. I have seen it brought up on other forums quite a bit.

Oh, and DefectorZ - thanks for the heads up. I broke down and ordered the micro modular, I had a fit of gear lust there for a second ;). Now I just have to wait for it to get to the US from Sweden and then from Nova Musik to me. The guy at Nova said probably the end of November or early December. I guess they will be the last 20 micro mods ever made.

The 2 MIDI ins/outs required is kind of weird but makes sense. I actually still have a soundblaster in my comp for soundfonts so I may have to buy one of those MIDI ->Joystick port connections.

Darin - Mine's a Rack Attack, not software.

Good luck with the bass. I highly recommend you get yourself a SansAmp - it makes a world of difference in the sound you can get out of any bass. An indispensable piece of gear (good on guitar too)

if you're not using an amp-cabinet combo or a sansamp/pod/other-modeler-thing, try the instrument in on the tone factory and putting the sound through an amp-sim once it's recorded.

Yeah, I've got the bass going into the front panel with some light compression. Been kinda playing with the other things too. I'll try a an amp sim in the mix - see what happens.

Def, welcome to the bassist's club. I also recommend getting the Bass Driver. It's what I use, and everybody and their mother love what it does for the tone of an instrument. Seriously, it's on my top five list for best things ever that I spent $150 on. I'm hoping you got a Jazz Bass. They are much more versatile than the P-Bass, and one you have the Jazz mastered, you can play just about any gig in the world, should the urge arise.

http://www.basslinks.nl/index.php

Check out that place. Lots of good folks over there, lots of advice and info, and some SERIOUS players. Noone skimps on passing out good knowledge there. Good luck, and whatever you do, remember that that thing is not a guitar, is not a synth, is not the drums...it is THE BASS. Play bass.
