Hi guys, we are offering a unique opportunity at Toolroom, read on...

If you’re serious about your music and are into making beats, we’ve got a BIG opportunity for you aspiring producers... Mark Knight & Toolroom Records have teamed up with Beatport, Future Music Magazine & Sonic Academy to launch a fresh and exciting ‘co-production’ competition - the first of its kind.
The idea of the competition is to give up and coming producers the chance to work with one of the industry’s leading artists, launch their music career with the world’s premier dance label and be financially rewarded for their work, receiving 50% of publishing and an equal share of artist sales royalties. Not a bad deal at all.
The mechanics of the competition are simple…
• Mark Knight has upload key parts of the project to Beatport and midi parts to Toolroom’s online store.

Beatport: http://tinyurl.com/mkbeatport
Toolroom: http://tinyurl.com/mkcompetition

• Entrants to finish track, name and upload to Beatport’s SoundCloud by the 15th July.
• No un-cleared samples to be used (full T&C’s relating to music for the competition will be avail on Beatport.com & djmarkknight.com)
• Winning track, as chosen by Toolroom, will be will announced on July 19th and released in physical & digital format as an ‘exclusive track’ on Mark Knight’s forth coming Toolroom Knights CD (out Oct 2010)

Winner receives:
• 50% of publishing & equal share of artist sales royalties
• $200 Beatport voucher
• Focal CMS 40 studio monitors from SCV distribution
• Soundcloud Pro account
• Native Instruments Maschine
• Annual subscription to Sonicacademy.com & 6 months personal mentoring
• Full PR & marketing campaign to launch their career

Mark comments:

“There seems to be an over saturation of remix competitions at the moment, but these aren’t really proving a spring board for people careers. With myself as a producer and Toolroom as a leading label, we felt we had the vehicle to offer up something innovative and put something back into the development of up and coming artists. The ethos of Toolroom has been one of finding and nurturing new talent - ala Funkagenda and Dave Spoon. We're looking for the stars of the future right now, so this co-production competition makes perfect sense.
With the 8 bar loop I’ve provided, I've laid down the backbone of the track with enough scope for interpretation. What I'm looking for is clever use of the parts, creative sound design with any new parts included and a good arrangement. Over to you guys...”

We caught up with Mark for a quick chat about the competition and what he looks for in demos...

Tell us about the competition you’re running in association with Beatport to find new talent – why a co-production competition?

There seems to be an over saturation of remix competitions at the moment, but these arent really proving a spring board for people careers. With myself as a producer and Toolroom as a leading label, we felt we had the vehicle to offer up something innovative and put something back into the development of up and coming artists.

What does this competition mean to Toolroom as a label?

The ethos of Toolroom has been one of finding and nurtring new talent - ala Funkagenda and Dave Spoon. We're looking for the stars of the future right now, so this co-production competition makes perfect sense.

What are you looking for in the winning track ?

With the 8 bar loop Ive provided, I've laid down the backbone of the track with enough scope for interpertation. What I'm looking for is clever use of the parts, creative sound design with any new parts included and a good arrangement. Over to you guys...

Can you give some advice on common mistakes you hear in other demos sent to Toolroom

Its hard to give an overall analysis of do's and don'ts. Advice I would give, is to look at the record and see if you can squeeze get another 10% out of it. Is it the best record it can possibly be? And, the final bench-mark; would you draw for this record without hesitation in every set you play? If so, it's finished.

Lastly, a word of advice to the future DJs and producers out there?

Work hard because you get nothing for nothing.

A short dissertation on Mark Knight's solicitation. The new gate keepers in the music world.

If your tracks are not getting played in the clubs; it has little or nothing to do with your musical abilities. Gate-keeping, the age old tradition which usurps the good that happens in the world, has more to do with 'who you know' than 'what you know'. You would think, by measure of results in the world today, it would be more blatantly obvious. The power filters which move into play, the gatekeepers, the usurpers, the exploiters. A value system which cannot sustain long term effective results. Must find new things, new exploits, new ground to usurp. And in this case, a new music genre.

Thank you Toolroom Records. But no thanks. Through the ease of access to media in the internet, we are able to bypass the usual suspects, the usual gatekeepers and get worldwide response. I don’t mind being the best and baddest of the bad.
