Yamaha MDF-1

The MDF1 Midi Data Filer from Yamaha, is a 2.8" quick disk drive for storing system exclusive data from midi devices. Features include 7 segment LED, midi in / out / thru, disk memory indicator, delete & copy functions, backup utilities, and disk capacity of 64K per side. Examples of the amount of disk storage per side would be 14 sets of sounds for DX7/21/100/TX7, 7 sets of patterns & songs for the RX11/21/21L drum machines, 1 full QX21 sequence, or QX5 memory can be saved on both sides of a single diskette. The MDF1 will work with other devices that can transmit or receive midi dump.

I've actually got one of these left from when I had the QX-5.... and great it is too...... simple to use, ... trouble is getting the disks.... anyways.... if you need some storage for synthpatch or sequencer data, and see one... check it out.... maybe the owner has a bunch of disks to go with..... then you've got a nice box to store & load your tracks for gigs etc.... nice... well made.... comments please...

I need to know if this thing can record realtime knob movements, or if it's just for storing patches and stuff...

My problem is this: I really really want to buy an Access Virus, but the only thing I got to control it with is a crappy MC-303.
Can the MC-303 send all necessary information to the Virus for me to have different patches on different parts?! Can the MC-303 record realtime knob movements. And, if all of the above is perfectly possible (which I doubt it is), can the MDF-1 save the data from both machines and make it one file?
Dammit!! I need that synth! My body craves for it!

Any help will be much appreciated and I'll even create a temple for you in my backyard in case you give me some useful info. Thanks!

Is the MDF-1 still available?
I have about 20 Quick-disks with MDF-1 bulk data dumps of arrangments I did over 10 years ago. I need this unit as mine gave up the ghost sometime ago.

Hey there
I purchased the mdf1 when it was new back in the 80s i believe. It went through a flood still worked then it lost it's get up and go after smoke inhalation during a fire. This was one tuff data filer for the price. Ended up getting the mdf2 w/o the floppy.Still have it, However I have maybe 30 2.8 disks full of sequences i did back in the 80s and would love to retrieve the data from these disks. Would love to purchase a working Mdf1 just to retreive the data.
G.

A friend gave me one of these long ago, but I never got around to using it; I'm not even sure if it works (no power adaptor, disks)! I had a W7 at the time (which has its own floppy drive) so I really had no use for it.

Awesome! How much do you want for it? Do you have a Paypal account? I'd prefer that mode of payment. I also have a FedEx account so I can prepay for the shipping too. Email me off forum to discuss further.

I have power cords and plenty of disks. And right now I have 3 broken down units in pieces at the this time. I am hoping your unit works and perhaps has not gotten much mileage. Also the big ? will be if the heads are aligned properly to read my data disks. I found that to be an issue. Apparently Yamaha never had a standard for alignment. What was written to one disk sometimes could not be read from another unit.

Look foward to hearing from you,

Jamie
