GENERAL

1) Is the DA7MKII user friendly?

Yes. Once the input level and signal routing has been set, mixing simply involves using the faders and buttons, the same as an analog mixer. Level, EQ, PAN, DYNAMICS, AUX sends and Routing of each channel are controlled using dedicated knobs, faders and buttons. Settings can be stored to internal memory and libraries make it possible to store and recall settings for use at a later time. Multiple LED's and a backlit LCD screen can display all adjustable parameters of the selected Channel simultaneously.

2) Can the DA7MKII function without an external computer or monitor?

Yes. The DA7MKII is completely self-contained. It has everything needed to perform digital automated mixing right out of the box. By not needing or relying on an external or separate CPU (computer) and monitor means the DA7MKII can be transported and easily used.

3) Do I need to search through many pages and menus to adjust the console's parameters?

No. A 320 x 240 backlit LCD displays various windows, the mixer status and functions along with displays for internal or incoming timecode. When Auto Channel Select and Auto Display Change are enabled, functions such as EQ, Dynamics and Channel View will change automatically appear on the LCD display. For example, if you adjust an EQ or Dynamics control in the dedicated channel strip, the LCD display will shift to the Channel, EQ or Dynamics screen.

4) How do I navigate the screen?

There are several different ways of navigating the screen. You can use the Arrow Keys to cursor around the screen. This method "wraps" around the screen, so if you are at the top and you press the arrow one more time, it will show up at the bottom. This works on the sides of the screen as well. You can also go into "Cursor Mode". You can then use the Parameter Dial to quickly cursor around the screen.

5) Is there a built-in reverb?

No. Panasonic devoted the DSP processing to improve sound and console functionality. A digital stereo send and return is provided allowing connection with most external reverbs and signal processors.

6) Is there a video output?

The DA7MKII comes equipped with ports for use with Personal Computers. Optional software will expand the DA7MKII's mixing and memory capabilities while allowing most of the DA7MKII's parameters to be viewed on larger computer screens. Therefore an SVGA port is not necessary.

7) Is there a meter bridge?

There is a full function metering system in the LCD display. An optional meter bridge is also available. It has 26 High Resolution Meters allowing monitoring of all of the 38 inputs, buses, AUX's and L/R master. All inputs and buses are clearly displayed. The 20-segment peak and average LED's can automatically switch to display the current fader layer status (console link).

8) Is there a headphone control?

Yes. A Stereo 1/4" TRS phone plug is located under the front edge of the top panel along with a level control. A powerful Headphone output follows the Monitor A signal path.

Yes. See answer above.

AUTOMATION FAQ'S

1) Does the DA7MKII offer automation?

Yes. Dynamic real-time and Scene (Snapshot) automation is included. Recording and mix down automation can be synchronized to external MTC (MIDI Time Code) or MIDI clock, SMPTE or MIDI timecode. Automation can also be rehearsed by running the built-in generator.

2) Which parameters can be automated?

Faders, EQ Parameters, Dynamics on/off, channel on/off, panning, surround sound, AUX send, balance, Scene memory, Channel memory, EQ and Dynamics Libraries.

3) Is there Scene (Snapshot) Memory?

50 scene memories can be used to store "snapshots" of all console fader and parameter settings and these scenes are stored as events for automation. Off-line editing allows scene memory, fader, fader group, mute group, EQ, dynamics/delay and channel library recall to be specified in single frame increments.

4) Is Scene memory difficult to use?

Scene memory operation is straightforward. The DA7MKII records all parameters globally. When a scene is recalled the Fader, Fader Group, Mute Group, EQ and Dynamics will be recalled. Mix scenes can be titled for easy identification and there are dedicated Scene Number display LED next to the LCD display. There is an UNDO function for restoring mix scene data that has been overwritten accidentally.

5) Can scene memory snapshots be recorded in the Automation?

Yes. Scene memory recalls can be added to the Automation during recording or inserted into the Automation using the Event Edit window. (i.e. "off-line" editing). The same applies for library recalls too, such as EQ, Dynamics, Libraries and Channel.

6) Can automation memory be expanded?

Optional software will allow connection with PC's, allowing storage to the on-line computer. However the DA7MKII comes with 32,000 events of automation standard and this should be sufficient for most situations.

7) How can Automation data and Scene memory be saved?

Automation and Library data can be saved via MIDI Bulk Dump to a MIDI Data Filer or MIDI sequencer. The DA7MKII will work along with PC software to save the DA7MKII's internal data.

8) What are the fader recording modes?

There are two fader recording modes: Absolute and Relative. When Absolute mode is selected, the actual fader movements are recorded. When Relative mode is selected, fader movements relative to the existing fader data are recorded. This mode, for example, allows you to increase a level by, 3dB relative to the existing data.

9) Can automation be started on the console, then expanded or continued on the Remote software? No. The automation information must be performed on one or the other. Ex: I am working on the console automation and running out of event memory. I cannot then transfer that data to the Remote software to continue working. Start the project where you think the project will end.

10) Does automation eat up scene memory?

Scene memory is separate from the Automation, Channel, EQ and Dynamic memory.

11) Can the automation memory be upgraded?

The best way to upgrade the amount of memory is by using the Remote Software.

12) What can be recorded in Automation?

Anything that is under control of the CPU. Dynamic fader moves, panning, surround panning, EQ on/off, EQ sweeps, Dynamics, Channel on/off, AUX send levels & on/off, AUX returns, Bus levels, Library recalls, Scene recall, etc.

13) How many automation events are available?

32,000 onboard.

14) What makes up an "event" in automation?

Anytime a button is pushed, it constitutes an event. If a channel is turned ON, that is one event. If the channel is then turned OFF, that is one event as well. A fader move from infinity to +10 constitutes up to 127 events, dependent on the speed at which the fader travels. A Scene Memory change, which can change virtually EVERY setting on the console, only uses one event!

LIBRARIES

1) How many EQ libraries are there?

There are 50 memory locations for EQ storage.

2) How many EQ presets?

There are no EQ presets. This gives you more memory to store your own!

3) How many dynamics libraries?

There are 50 memory locations for Dynamics storage.

4) How many channel libraries?

There are 50 memory locations for Channel Strip storage.

5) How many scene memories?

There are 50 memory locations for Scene storage. A SCENE is a status "snapshot" of every position of every function on the console.

6) How do I store surround sound panning information I have set up for a specific channel?

Surround vectors paths are stored along with the channel strip in the CHANNEL library.

7) What is stored in a channel library?

All attributes of the channel including: 48V, Phase, Linking, Grouping, AUX status, EQ, Dynamics, Panning, Routing, etc.

SCENE MEMORY

1) How many scene memories?

There are 50 memory locations for Scene storage. A SCENE is a status "snapshot" of every position of every function on the console.

2) Does automation eat up scene memory?

Scene memory is separate from the Automation Memory.

3) What is stored in a scene memory?

Everything! All channel routing, EQ's, Dynamics, Panning, Fader location, AUX Assignments, AUX Levels, Surround information, MIDI information, etc. The only functions that are not stored are the mic/line pre-amp levels and the monitor outputs. Both of these functions are in the analog world and not controlled digitally by the onboard CPU.

4) Can I crossfade between scenes?

Yes, globally, with up to 3 seconds between scene changes.

TANDEM OPERATIONS

1) What does Tandem operation mean?

This is the ability to link or combine two DA7MKII's together as one unified console. One DA7MKII acts as a master the other as a slave. The master performs all of the monitoring functions, while both consoles together expand the number of total inputs to 76 and doubles the internal libraries and memories.

2) Do I need a tandem card for both consoles to run tandem operation?

Yes. This allows the consoles to speak to each other "bi-directional". You will also need a Panasonic Pro Audio Tandem Cable, Part No. DA/DB-DB, a MINI DIN 8 Pin Serial Cable (Macintosh Printer Cable) and a 75 W BNC-BNC cable for wordclock.

3) What functions go across in tandem operation?

Auxiliary sends, 8 buses, L/R Master Output and Solo Bus.

4) When using 2 consoles in tandem, is L/R out available on both consoles?

Yes. Both consoles provide a "mult" output of the L/R signal, essentially giving you the capability of recording your mix on up to 4 different formats at once.

5) Are bus outputs available on both consoles?

Yes. The buses are available at the given card slot. All 8 buses show up on Slots 1 & 2 on both consoles.

MIDI AND COMPUTER OPERATION

1) Can the DA7MKII function with Music Sequencers?

The DA7MKII is equipped with MIDI IN and OUT terminals. MIDI program change numbers can be used to simultaneously switch DA7MKII scene memories and programs on external effect devices, while system exclusive data can be used for precise sequence control of all mixing parameters.

2) Can a Computer interface with the DA7MKII?

Both RS422/RS485 ports are provided to allow direct control from a personal computer running the appropriate software.

3) Can all parameters be controlled via MIDI?

All parameters can be controlled via MIDI (using System Exclusive parameter changes), including not only faders but also EQ and Dynamics. Automation data, setup data, Scene Memory data and Library data can be saved to an external computer or MIDI data filer via MIDI bulk dump.

4) How do I back up my libraries and automation data?

Via MIDI bulk dump to a sequencer, data recorder or MIDI filer.

5) How many locate points do I have when using MMC?

6.

6) Can I set a loop?

Yes. One loop between locate points 1 & 2.

7) Does the DA7MKII generate some form of Time Code?

The DA7MKII generates internal MIDI Time Code. This is for stand-alone operations only and cannot be output to the outside world.

8) Can I change the hexadecimal data stream to define my own control parameters?

Yes, that feature is available onboard.

SURROUND SOUND

1) Is there Surround Sound Monitoring and Panning?

Yes. The DA7MKII provides six discreet (Left Front-Center-Right Front, Left Surround, Right Surround, Sub woofer) outputs to create true 5.1 recordings when used with external surround sound processors. There are 3 modes for creating a sound path: Interactive, Graphical and Vector Based. All parameters of the Surround Sound panning can be edited and stored into memory.

2) Does the DA7MKII do "THX" mixing?

THX is a specification for reproduction and not a matrix or encoded surround specification. THX involves minimum reproduction characteristics for amplifier output, speaker SPL and dispersion, as well as room dimensions, etc. With this said, yes, the DA7MKII will fit perfectly into a THX environment.

3) Does the DA7MKII output a matrix/encoded surround signal?

No. The DA7MKII gives you the ability to output 6 full bandwidth channels through bus 1-6 and monitor them through the Monitor A, B and L/R. You must then send your 6 signals through the encoder system of your choice.

4) Where does the joystick plug in for surround panning operations?

In the MIDI port.

5) Can I do surround sound panning without the joystick?

Yes. Through the Send Volume, Jog & Fader or Pattern Modes provided onboard.

6) How do I store surround sound panning information I have set up for a specific channel?

Surround vectors paths are stored along with the channel strip in the CHANNEL library.

7) How can I copy surround sound panning information from one channel to another?

After you have stored the information in a CHANNEL library, call up that channel, and then go to Multi Channel View to select your destination channel to copy to. Another way is to press the Multi Channel View button on the LCD bridge while you are in the Surround screen. This will copy the Surround information only and not the other attributes of the channel.

8) I know that the "dot one" in a 5.1 surround mix is the sum of information from the 5 main channels, bandwidth limited and sent to a sub-woofer. Does the DA7MKII handle sub information in this manner?

The DA7MKII gives you the ability to send full bandwidth information to the sub channel. You must either limit the bandwidth via the onboard 4 band parametric equalizer on the bus or an ancillary EQ or crossover network. The DA7MKII does no summing or matrixing of information.

9) How do I monitor surround information?

The DA7MKII gives you the ability to monitor you 6 buses to your recorder via the monitor outputs or the AUX outputs.

10) Can I "collapse" a surround mix into stereo or mono to check for phase and format compatibility?

This must be done with an ancillary speaker monitoring system

TIME CODE & SYNCHRONIZATION

1) Can the DA7MKII be used in Video and Postproduction?

Yes. Audio Follows Video can be performed with the optional SMPTE/V Sync card or via a SMPTE to MIDI converter.

2) What is Word Clock?

Word Clock is a digital pulse that allows all digital signals to run in sync.

3) How difficult is it to set the internal Wordclock?

Once the Wordclock source has been set, it will not be necessary to change it frequently. The DA7MKII Wordclock Select page in DIG I/O menu provides convenient monitoring facility showing which digital sources are connected.

4) Do I have a Wordclock error if I am hearing pops and clicks?

Check in the D I/O screen to make sure your clock is set correctly. This could be a combination of clock connection errors or software set up errors.

5) What is the sampling frequency when Internal clock is used?

44.1kHz or 48kHz. The default sampling rate is 48kHz.

6) What is House Sync?

House Sync is used in Video Houses, Post Production Houses and anywhere video is being switched or routed. Similar to Word Clock in its function, it allows all video signals to run in sync.

7) Does the DA7MKII generate some form of Time Code?

Yes. (See number 7 in MIDI AND COMPUTER OPERATIONS)

8) What timecode frame rates are supported?

The DA7MKII supports 30 NDF, 30 DF, 25 and 24. These rates are selected on one of the Automation Set-Up pages. The internal timecode generator is intended only for checking and trying the Automation function. There is no timecode output.

9) I want to lock to SMPTE. Does the SMPTE card take up a card slot?

The optional SMPTE card uses its proprietary slot. It does not interfere with the 3 slots used for audio/inserts/tandem operations. It is physically different and will NOT fit in the 3 audio slots.

10) Does the SMPTE/V Sync card "Jam Sync"?

The SMPTE card is a reader only. The card provides no functions for "free wheeling", "flywheel", "user bits" or other functions of a SMPTE generator.

11) What is V Sync and why would I need it?

V Sync is Video Sync. The DA7MKII can lock to video sync or house sync, with the optional SMPTE/V Sync Card. This card utilizes it's own proprietary slot, so no audio slots are used. You would use V Sync in any postproduction application where you where locking audio to picture.

DITHER

1) Can 24-bit data be recorded to a 16-bit recorder?

No, you need to use the Dither function, which is implemented for the 8 Bus outputs, AUX out 1 & 2 and the Stereo Out. The number of bits for dither can be set as required (e.g. 16-bit, 18-bit, 20-bit).
