Quasimidi SIRIUS

In the techno/Trance/hard-styles etc 'virtual analog' or 'analog-modelling' stakes, there are a few key players. Outside of the Majors' offerings which include the JP's from Roland, the AN1x and derivitives from Yamaha and the Korg offerings of Electribe's, Prophecy & forthcoming Oasys etc, we are left with the independents who are growing strongly in this arena... Primarily the indie success springs partly from them being first on the scene with this sorta modelling' synth, and also from the fact that the smaller companies are targeting a specific market more... The majority of larger Synths purchased now i'd say are going for use towards creating 'dance' orientated music... and in this respect the smaller indies started the scene, and imho market specifically to that genre in a more close-to-the-ground, efficient way...

Ok... if you're a newbie after some 'virtual-analogue', you've got a few makes/models to go for.... and Quasimidi are a long-time player in this specific 'electronic-dance' genre starting as they did years ago back in the early 90's with a couple of 'dance/techno' orientated digital synths - the Quasar & Technox... two digital rom player synths with good filters and a big pallette of ONLY 'techno/dance' orientated sounds...

Next Quasimidi came in with the Raven & Rave-o-lution 309 units... drums, synth and sequencer in one package each with a different twist designed to get the user into electronic dance styles 'all-in-one', and this new Sirius (and their new Polymorph) also seem to keep to that tradition... offering drums, synths and a sequencer in both models.. but each is different...

so The SIRIUS... a high-end 'analog-modelling' unit with Vocoder built in (even comes with a mic on a gooseneck boom)... yup - it's German and it's definately got that German/techno orientated vibe to it - 100% authentic imho - DEFINATELY a contender !!! - the price is pitched right in there mid-range, with synths the Novation Nova and Quasimidi's other newcomer, the Polymorph...

Here's the main SIRIUS Features:

New DTE-Synthese with powerful Sound and flexible Filtermodels

Vocoder with 16 exciting Basic-Configurations (Filterbank, Formant-Shift, Roboter-Voice,...), included Gooseneck-Microphone

A full compliment of Realtime-Knobs for realtime manipulation and quick flexible sound-creation.

Intelligent Macro-Functions, Random Sound Creation and Fast-Save for super-fast Sound Creation

Sequencer/Drumcomputer with Realtime record, Drumgrid, and Step-Edit

Arpeggiator with many different style-types

Beat Recognition System, synchronizes the sequencer to external Audiosignals (e.g. Turntables, CD)

Architecture: 28 Voices, 480 RAM-, 480 ROM-Sounds, 256 Drum-Instruments for 20 Drumsets, 7 channel Multimode...

So... not a huge in-depth analysis of the unit, I just wanted to add it into the listings for newbies to see a more 'full' listing of available 'virtual-analog' models on the market -

I definately would like to try this baby out, reports are good for the unit, with users claiming excellent & 'different' sounds... check it out and i'll trawl thru the info and try to get a better spec listing plus some audio.. (done now)...

So... The SIRIUS - sounds GREAT to me, and at the price, bloody good value i'd say.. slap one of these with even a cheap s/h sampler and it's a formidable starter system... - Quasimidi products in this price range are used by famous names - ... user comments please....

I love this thing. Even the chessy onboard demos are great because Kraftwerk themselves did 2 songs!!! It is pretty damn weird to hear some Kraftwerk bubbly blurps coming out of your new keyboard. But the real deal is that this machine sounds good. I am under impressed by other "analog modellers" that sound very thin and digital by comparison. Well, actually, there is NO modelling synth that actually sounds analog, but the difference with the digital sound of the Sirius is that it sounds REALLY REALLLY good, especially in the bass zone. Even the presets have a lot of mileage left on them for the future when techno goes the way of disco. This guy is a monster I tell ya! The intuitive interface--things like simple macro knobs and the mixer knobs and the drum grid pattern make this FUN to use, which I know many "pro" users get all upset about-- you know, the users who think that struggle makes you stonger! No struggle needed with the Sirius. I read reviews where they bashed the Vocoder, but it is a deep part of the machine, and I got the feeling that the reviewers were not really used to what a Vocoder really is--this thing is very flexible in the filtering inputs, carrier choices, etc, so it is open ended. The sequencer is the only menu heavy part of the Sirius, so that will take some learning, but aside from that, it is really a fast and fun and HUGE sounding machine. The drum sounds rule too. You can order direct from Florida if you live in the states--unfortunately I haven't seen many on display in shops for long, so it is hard to go get a feel for one, but I was fortunate to stumble on a demo model at my local guitar center, and I mail ordered one direct much cheaper a few months later. Check it out if you dig digital, and if you need an "all in one". STENZO

Yeah, this is a really great synth. I've had it for 6 months, and it still keeps suprising me. Just keep on hitting that Random Sound button and fucking around, and you'll have fun for hours. A few bad words I CAN say:
1) The resonance sounds crappy when the filter is 4-pole and the resonance is high. But 2-pole filter is great all the way.
2) The knobs are a little twiddly. Not bad, but could be better.
3) Vocoder doesn't do a good job on the vocals.

But still, an extremly good synth, was my second synth after I got a Jupiter-4 for under $100 :)

Yes they transmit. Its a wicked machine but don't expect the drums to sound like the 309- theyre different- possibly not as punchy and raw- maybe thats a good thing.

I like the Hi Hats, the kicks and the percussion. I think the preset snare sounds have a strong electronic bias but you'll be programming your own any way won't you?

Also, the resonance can be crackly when used in extremes. The synth section is a huge improvement over the 309 -the sounds are really anthemic if you know what I mean but I miss the major /minor waves that were on offer on the 309

As for expansions, it looks as though only os improvements are possible (only 1 chip available when you open the back panel up).
I've had reservations at times but now I love it. It is soooooooo much better than the cs2x and in many ways the 505- It is very original and has none of the cliches that so many other alleged "dance" products offer.

Audio sync is really good but I have not found it totally successful on some types of uk garage- the beat wanders eventually

Check for quality control because I had to send my first one back.

I don't know- maybe I'm talking crap. I am a student with good skills who had a fairly decent amount of kit that I earned making donuts part time! Then I was burgled and lost everything. This is my first new purchase to start rebuilding my set up and it was a good one. Go for it- but I don't want too many people knowing how good they are. Any questions- email me

ps The arp is very good and its nice to see a gater -something I use more in fact than the becoming cliched arp

I think the sirius is a killer machine but a word of warning to potential buyers MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU DO ON IT VIA MIDI REGULARLY!!!!!

I have been using it as a stand alone unit without a computer sequencer and THREE (3) times now it has crashed when the power was turned on, filling the memory with crap, destroying all songs and patches. It pissed me off so much I wont write anything with it until I get my midi setup sorted.

Great sounds tho... wicked arpegiator and good drum programming box!

Paul

this synth has a wonderful interface. The sequencer allows you to be quite intuitive whilst recording loops, tweak sounds and the vocoder is a major editing tool allowing you to modulate any sounds . internal and external......but I bought this synth because I loved the sounds of the raveolution. The drums come close but not the bass. Overall though I'm very happy with it.

Can anyone tell me if the Sirius has everything ( and more) that the Rave 309 has? I don't know which one to get. Are the Sirius's drums and bass/leads the same as the 309. Or are they two different machines. Thanks

Nick...definitely not! Do not expect the Sirius to sound like the 309. The interface & sequencer are the same (or at least similar) but they are 2 different synths that use 2 different synthesis techniques. Even though it is sometimes hyped as a "309 plus" it really doesn't sound as good, and can't do the 303 emulation like the Rave-o can. If you want the killer x0x-style sounds go with the 309 (or Drumstation/BassStation etc)

yo Dieter i have been looking to buy one here in belgium too. there doesnt seem to be any store that sells quasimidi and quasimidi doesn't seem to be interested in selling their products to people in Belgium. I've mailed them several times to ask for information on where to buy one or how to buy one from them, but they never bothered to get back to me! they might make some good synths but it seems they don't wanna sell 'em over here.
Despite their lousy distribution and online service i'm still interested in buying one... so quasimidi people if you're out there...:phreako1@hotmail.com

Where are Quasimidi? I have a problem with my Sirius. I got it directly from them. Shortly afterwards it went wrong. Turnkey in London 'fixed it' but it went wrong again, so they fixed it again. Now, three years later it has done the same thing once more. Can anyone help?

Hi!
I'm searching for a Quasimidi Sirius in good state and fully working of course.
from anywhere in the world.
I can be delivered.

Did someone compare the Sirius and Polymorph.
Demos In youTube seems to have different sound, Sirius seems warmer.
Is it because of different recording or Sirius is really bigger?

It remember me the difference between Ensoniq EPS vs EPS 16+ and ASR...
EPS has bigger sound and more dirty.
16+ and after have cleaner sound and more dynamic.
Feels better at first hearing, but EPS has really more sound character.

Greetings
