Richard Allen RA8M
The Richard Allen RA8M is the latest incarnation of the Older RA8... I used to use a pair of RA8's for quite a while, over a year, and got plenty of deals on the table with them... I've had mixes accepted as master product by majors which was mixed on those RA8's and some of those mixes were choosen as 'preferable' by the label to other mixes we did on bloody great Urei's... The RA8's had a real nice even sound and worked well in a small room sized studio... Anyways, I dunno what happened to those speakers now... I think a driver went and I left them in an old place when I moved house,... wait no that can't be right cos I replaced that driver, and Richard Allen sent it pronto at a great price too... hmm.. (it's got me mystified now actualy??!) - oh well, I guess they got ripped by one old girlfreind who tried to have away with my studio one time... Shee-it!!.. I musta overlooked those speakers... rats!!... Anyways, GREAT speakers for the price... Even sound, nice bass end, all the usual things you want, nice stereo image, balanced mid's and nicely defined but not abrasive top-end..... Well, these RA8M's are the improved 'next-gen' version... Here's the product blurb:
"At Richard Allan we have always believed that a near-field monitor should be acoustically invisible, allowing you to monitor the music you are recording with accuracy. The flat frequency response exhibited by the amplifiers and CD players your recordings will be played on allows music to be reproduced extremely accurately. Therefore your monitors must be capable of presenting you with this wholly honest view of your mix.
The Richard Allan RA8M is a much-improved version of the highly successful RA8 studio monitor, (over 1000 pairs were supplied to the BBC, an organisation recognised for demanding the highest possible standards of sound reproduction from loudspeakers). Improvements have been made in both acoustic and aesthetic areas, with a brand new frequencies and clarity throughout the treble region (3.5kHz - 20kHz).
A new die-cast magnesium alloy chassis is used for the 200mm bass/mid driver to improve stability of the magnet/coil structure and therefore reduce distortion throughout the critical 40Hz- I OOHz region.
The cross over network is hard wired using hand wound components to remove the problems of losses and distortion inherent in printed circuit boards. Bi-wiring facilities are also incorporated using the four gold plated binding posts, enabling maximum sound quality to be gained by minimising the unwanted cross talk between the drive units. The RA8M' s flat frequency response and carefUl choice of drive unit cone materials allows the monitoring and reproduction of music with tonal neutrality, low colouration and absolute accuracy."
The RA8M comes in a graphite finish.

Hi, Sorry to trouble you but I have been chasing Richard Allan Speakers and wondering if there is an Australian dealer yet? I have some older Richard Allan speakers and think they are the best stuff around and have a deep interest in audio and are very interested to find out any thing I can about Richard Allan.
Last I head there was a place in England still selling them I think it was called Magnum audio or something?
I look forward to hearing any info anyone couuld offer.
Francis

I bought a pair of these speakers secondhand in Australia, not knowing a lot about them and intending to use them as 'effects' speakers with my ProAc mains. What a tragic misuse of brilliant engineering that would have been. These speakers are at least as good as the ProAcs in every way, and deserve 'main' status. The sound (matched to a 100W Marantz Dolby Digital receiver) is rich, detailed, balanced and piercing, and the imagery superb. I kept swapping them around with the ProAcs and am still not sure which I prefer.
My congratulations to the designers.

PS Are there any retailers here in Oz??

I've had a pair of the original RA8 monitors for about 10 years now and I love them to bits. After working with them in my studio, three other producers have been persuaded to buy a pair. Solid imaging, smooth bass rolloff and a revealing character means that I have been able to both mix and master with confidence, although in my room a very slight tilt away from treble is needed for an even response. Very highly recommended.

I have heard many, many speakers over the past 10 years and have used a good number of models at home. My recent move to a new flat had been causing problems. No speaker I seemed to try sounded quite right with the sound typically lacking weight and 'presence'. A pair of Proac 1SC became available for me to try and these proved their worth instantly, sounding large, tight but weighty with super mid-range and imaging. The only trouble was the price which was on the rich side for my liking so the search continued. That was until I stumbled upon a used pair of Richard Allan RA8s at a give away price. The sound from these presented an instant rightness in my room with a smooth, detailed and very comfortable mid-range, large and flowing scale and formidable bass reproduction. Where the Proacs had proved to be a well tuned and agile 2 seater sports car, the Richard Allans exhibit a poise and sense of ease associated with the best German mile eaters. I have been using these speakers happily ever since, so right the sound in my room that I doubt I could better it without a lottery winner's purse at my disposal.
