Clavia Nord Lead

Now discontinued the Nord lead synth arrived in 1995 and introduced analog modelling or 'virtual analog' technogy to the world.  The first two Nord lead synths were priced accordingly on release: Nord Lead 1:  (Keys) £999 (Rack) £799  - Nord Lead 2:  (Keys) £1495, (Rack) £1295.

The Nord Lead version 1 is a 4 part multi-timbrel, 4 voice modelling synth, with 2 oscillators per voice.... so it's 4 seperate monosynths, or a 4 voice polysynth. You can expand the unit to go to 12 voices with an 8 voice expansion add-on, that also offers extra patch storage banks via PCMCIA cards.

All the main controls on the Nord's have a dedicated control knob, and they all output midi... and of course all the parameters recieve MIDI controlle data too, with some nifty extra's like midi trigger routing to control the LFO's or Arpeggiator clock.

The Nord Lead 2 is a higher power unit available again as Keyboard or Rack, this unit bumps the voices up to 16, retains the 4 part multi-mode, but gives you 4 seperate outputs to mix 'em on seperate channels. You also get a Sine wave oscillator choice, ring modulation, distortion on the filter and extra LFO wave coices and destinations amongst others.

Yup the king of virtual I'd say! I own Nord rack and to be honest I haven't done a track without it since I got it! It doesn't sparkle in the feature section and in a way it's limited the LFO and Apreggiator are pretty much the down side! So how does it sound, in couple of words IN YOUR FACE, its sounds gritty dirty almost like the filter can't handle it and is giving some kind of soft distorted noise in the sound !RUFF! , but some patches sound crystal clean DX7 like! Clavia have done a great job in os 2.0 were you get great organ patches (try tweaking those drawback sounds and yar in luv), and those percussion are the icing on the cake & 4multi its beautiful! Its a breeze to use and when you start layering you really start to enjoy this sweetheart and that's when it does start coming close to the real thing, but still there is always that virtual color, and I don't mean it in a bad way, I luv it for it. Personally I use it mostly as a lead, as a bass generator it doesn't really fill the hole, but its great for those clean sub d'n'b basses.

If you buy one your not buying it for the features, the gem lies its those sounds!! (I'll send a demo)! I can only say try one Ð

When I first started getting seriously into the

music scene again, a guy who just happened to be

at the local music store had one of these... it

looked rather cool, so I asked him about it, and

he offered to sell it to me for about $400... man,

if I had *any* clue about the damn thing, I would

have taken that in a heartbeat, but unfortunately I had never heard of it and didn't recognize the

company and I decided to go with a Juno 106 for

about the same price range since it was a known

"good" synth from my own era. I swear, since I

started really getting the goods on the market

these days, the one thing I have been kicking

myself in the ass for more than anything else is

that I didn't take that damn Nord Lead when I had

the chance... Christ, I have *never* felt so

forking stupid in my life.

I purchased the Nord 2 a few weeks back and I must say it is one of the best sounding synths I have ever heard. It rivals many old analog monsters. Envelopes are super quick. It definetly has its own sound, and I wouldn't try to make it sound like something else. That is one of the many beauties of this synth. No its not analog, yes it sounds analog. You can make this thing sound so jacked up but it still sounds great! To top that off Vince Clarke uses it. He even brought it to the Rosie O'Donnell show. You know if Vince uses it it's a quality item. After all he is the king of synth. By the way kilo, I know this is a "dance" site, but a little synth pop here and there wouldn't hurt. How bout a good demo using the Nord.

I've been an Erasure-fan for years now, got heavily into synth-pop and I just adore these great sounds Vince Clarke gets out of these old synths. I thought there'd never be a way I could have a synth like that because it isn't easy to find an oldy these days. But when I got the chance to buy a synth I was lucky enough to buy a Nord Lead. It's the most fantastic synth I know and though being a bit to the expensive side (which is why it didn't end up on the top of many music magazine's charts at the end of last year) I'm sure it's the best non-analogue synth sounding so analogue around!

I have yet to buy one, but when I do, I will buy a Nord Lead 2! There is no doubt in my mind! A friend of mine had one, and the sound is unbelievable! The best part is, my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails, even uses them quite often!

I`m tired of listning to folks who says that JP is a toy, that it sounds digital, and that the Nord is so much better.

I have both the Nord Lead 2 and the JP and i can directly say that both synths have their own qualitys. Nord have 4 outputs-JP have effects,Nord have a Morph control-JP have a Ribbon ctrl., Nord have 4 part multi timbrality-JP have seqencing functions....i`ll stop here.

Both synths are very professional and very easy of use...

Buy both synths tomorow!!!!!! And dont forget: It`s not importaint to play the best instrument on world, it`s more importaint to play good and produce good music! GOOD LUCK!

I used a Nord Lead rack all over my new CD, Synthetic Block (on Mindspore Records)(sorry for the plug). Two things stand out. The construction is solid, with nice sturdy knobs, as opposed to the wiggly ones on the Quasimidi 309. The other aspect that stands out is that the arp won't synch to my sequencers clock regardless of what the manual says! Pretty good drum sounds with version 2 software for the original rack version.

I love my nord rack 2, it does a great job emulating vintage analog synths like the prophet and moog. It is really versatile and has the quickest response of any gear I own or have played with, having a control knob for every parameter is one of its best features. I just bought

a korg z1 today (18 voice) and it should be interesting to compare the two. You guys should include a section on this site for the z1 (unless I haven't found it yet), its a bit pricey but worth it.

The nord certainly sounds cool, but don't get dissapointed when you twist the knobs, the have a standard midi resolution of 128 steps. They are filtered however so it's no that obvious but I can hear it very clearly. However if the sound is being generated internally it's smooth as an analog synth.

I would like to here from you nord2 users out there if the n2 has the same problem. (modulars too)

And another wicked feature wich isn't in the manual, you can sync osc2 to osc1 and fm osc1 with the synced osc2! Also if you push shift

filter type you get another filter type (all three leds are lit OS version 2.6)

Have fun...

I've used them both (NL1&2)in techno, alt.rock, dance and trance productions. To me the NL's I got is the main key to make the soundscapes more interesting.

First of all it is the fact that they're very easy to use. And unlike much analogue equipment you can record every little turn of a knob you do real time. To be honest I really don't think the sound on the NL sounds "fat" enough if you don't use the "unison" button or double the sounds in different octaves. The problem with this aspect is ofcourse that you use all the voices very quick.

But nevertheless the NL's rock!!

I just thought I would correct a post I read... You cannot upgrade a Nord Lead 1 to a Nord Lead 2. You can only give it more poly and that such. The Nord Lead 2 still has more.

I'm buying the Nord Modular Rack, that way I get a Nord Lead and so much more. I will probably pick up the Lead 2 to control it just because they look so good togethor and it would make my sound more accessable for me.

Pretty cool synth. Solid construction. The pitch stick and all controls are on the left is a major plus for performance. I still prefer my Access Virus way over my Nord 2, but they work great together.

A GREAT synth! Love the knobs - reminds me of my old MemoryMoog and SCI Pro-One! Produces some kick-ass sounds, and wicked cool percussion/drums. However, it doesn't seem to be as warm as my Moog and Oberheim gear when I run the filter "softer", and when I try to do the classic long filter sweep with high resonance, it just isn't the same as a REAL analog filter (which I find disappointing.) The filter doesn't 100% replicate a real analog filter, but it comes pretty close, and still results in bad-ass analog synth sounds. I think my Oberheim Matrix is a little better, particularly with the analog warmth factor. But for "Groove" bass, pads, percussion, and effects, this thing rocks and I'll work it to death!

Got a great deal on a used Nord Lead 2 at the weekend. Took ten minutes to decide on buying it...wow, what a fat fat fat sound!

Got the thing home and spent a long time tweaking programs and enjoying the thick, warm sounds coming from my monitors.

Considered the JP-8000, but I already have an XP-30 and a VS-1680, so I didn't want yet another piece of roland gear in my studio....besides, although I'm probably a bit of a fashion victim for saying so, the nord oozes class. The red case, the sturdy knobs, the wooden pitch bender, the stone modwheel, its' a modern classic in exterior synth design.

Not only that, but whatever's under the lid is doing something rather incredible, because as many have said before....soundwise, this is the synth to die for. OK...we'd all like a real prophet, but this is good enough for me.

Yeah, there's no effects, so you only get a dry sound, but what a sound!!! If you want effects, then the four outputs make it easy to route the different layers of a performance through your favourite multi-fx unit. A bit of reverb and chorus and this baby really, really SINGS!! Try a panning delay on some of those prophet sounds, and maybe a bit of overdrive....TAKE COVER!!!!

Any gripes? Weeeelllll, you can't store your performances without the addition of a PCMCIA card, but I picked one of these up for 25 quid, and now I can store loads of sounds and performances. There's no aftertouch, but frankly who gives a toss? The arpeggiator (on LFO2)
is definitely a bit limitied, but then
you could always use a software arpeg of get clever with your sequencer.

Anyway, in conclusion I would advise anyone who has never heard the Nord to get down to their local store, get in the listening room and try it out. This is one dirty fat bastard of a synth on a serious mission.

Cheers
Dan

I've been using the NL2 for over a year in making house/trance music. The sound is unique and you really have to practise controller tweaking to get it right. The basses are LOW and the leads are FLYING HIGH. Unfortunately there are no easy to use effects on the NL like DELAY or DISTORTION so everything has to be done with the oscillators and lfos (which is hard but gives the uniqueness). I have sequenced my songs on the NL2 with CAKEWALK ,all the controllers (knob movements) are transmitted via MIDI so its just press record and start playing.
Basically the NL2 is a great spice for any kind of music, hard to use but offers infinitive possibilities and a really FAT and SMOOTH sound.

I own a nordlead 1... I like it a lot.
But only for drum and percussion sounds! (You can hear some weird drum stuff in my song "calm before the storm" on my page)
I do NOT use it for synthwork! I think it sucks for that usage...
Not enough bottom end!
But to my mind ALL (virtual) analogs suck... I just need my K2000VP!

Don't forget some external effects (be it software or hardware) to add a little distortion, reverb, delay or chorus... since none of that comes with this keyboard.

I guess it's better and diversifies the sound even more (if we all had the same effects boxes we were running this through you would instantly know how many people play this keyboard!)

I like running mine through a Line 6 POD XTPro...

I found using it with Cubase SX was tough until finally I learned that the performance mode transmits on Channel 16....

They should add a chapter in their manual on integration with a software sequencer because then you've got an arsenal.

Remember to save a little for your outboard fx... but if you've got the money you've got the sound machine.
