Novation SUPERBASSTATION
Heh he... Like the image?..... it's a mystical Superbasstation I did... heh..... here's the Dance-tech page for the new Novation Super Basstation........and Novation seem to be going from strength to strength with this new model offering better facilities and more variety of sound at the same price as the original Basstation.So.....what's the main differences for the new model ?......Well...for a start, you now get a Sub-Oscillator added for a deeper bass sound. The new model also has a ring modulator, white noise generator, and also an external input socket for processing external sounds through the Basstations curcuits.....excellent !!
The new model now features 2 LFO's utilising Random,Triangle & Sawtooth waves, and adding Square wave for the LFO's as another new touch......and best of all....You can sync them now to midi clock....Wicked huh ?!!!.......Imagine combining the new clocked arpeggiator with a couple of midi clocked LFO's now on this unit...and, You can select different time signitures for the LFO Clocks to run from the incoming clock dat, so you can run the LFO's on say a 3/4 pattern whilst the sequence is running on a 4/4 pattern...heh heh !!.......
SuperBasstation now splits the ADSR VCA & VCF envelopes to two seperate sections as opposed to the older model where they were shared & switchable.........also full midi control is implemented on ALL control knobs, and there are an additional 100 edit storage locations giving a new total of 200 patch positions.....so plenty of room for edits, and of course these can be ported across to your sequencer as sysex ......Novation have also included a nifty little 'Mixer' section where you can blend between the primary & secondary oscillators & external input to easily & quickly create the correct blend for the sound you wanna create......
Yup there's more........You get 3 real analog FX built in so this now in effect gives the novation a streo output to cater for the stereo analog chorus, and pan, which can be assigned to LFO or Envelope settings for wicked little auto pan effects !!!........Anyone who has used analog stereo chorus will know the beef this can add to the sound....particularly good for getting screaming twin detuned sounds........and this new unit also boasts genuine analog distortion for real storming distorted 303 type sounds etc......AND......there's an Arpeggiator too, with different sweep modes.....again clockable to midi ... !!.......brilliant.....Add to this Novations clock & sync facilities such as a built in Midi-CV gate Converter (which can be assigned to run on a different channel to the actual sound unit!!!)....& an analog trigger pulse out taken from the incoming midi clock, and all in all this synth simply add even greater value to what was already an excellent peice of kit......
The only thing I would have wanted extra on this baby would be the inclusion of an 18dB filter position to join the 12 & 24dB option.....but hey.....this is a luverlee little box people.......really.......there's just very little else out there in this field at this kind of price, and with such cheap H/D recording & sampling available now, just One of these units can be utilised to create if needs be, everything you need for analog sound compositions.
Well.....what else can I say.... I always liked the Basstation, when the first one came out some folks slagged it's contruction , or it's sound...."Doesn't really sound like a 303 etc"....But, on a price for value scale they are simply great....The sounds available are simple to achieve & varied....This new model simply adds a further feather to Novations cap....making the Basstation an even more versatile sound tool......Check out the RA file, and go & see one in a demo place....Enjoy !!

I mentioned this on the drumstation page before I realized it's more appropriate here. I think the Waldorf Pulse beats out the Super Basstation. The sounds on the Pulse are increadible. Also it sends and receives Midi CC info for everything. The filters on this baby are the fastest I've ever heard. Granted, it has no effects and only 40 user slots, but it doesn't get much better than the Pulse.

Fat, sqelchy, I suddenly appreciate the digital vs
analogue argument. My CS1X is great and this little
baby gives me all the sounds that the CS1X couldnt
quite deliver. Of course I fell foul of my limited
MIDI knowledge, to record all the twiddley knobs
realtime (cubase etc.) you might need a MIDI merge
box, a bit of pain but youve got to have that realtime
twiddle. It is great and well worth the 400 UKP,
however why no power switch ?
Get one if you can

I paid US$699.00 new in Boston.
List was US$899.00
Get's a 4 because there is no on/off switch.
Excellent considering how much it does for
$200 - $300 less than a used TB-303. Worth
the money.

Great fun, this makes the best squawks sirens liquid bass lines around for less than a grand. However it's a pig to programme, a TINY interface with layered menus etc. Well worth it though, the possibilities are endless........
