This article is a follow up for our also very popular article on how to integrate external MIDI hardware units such as synths, drum machines & samplers etc into a DAW-based studio setup without having to use a mixing desk:
How to setup a DAW & external MIDI hardware studio
Using that technique, you can route external MIDI kit audio outputs IN to your DAW mixes via inputs on your audio-interface & those external MIDI equipment audio feeds will be inside your DAW mixer alongside any on-board software instruments & audio tracks. You can then mix the entire production - internal & external MIDI sounds - via the main Left/Right outputs of your DAW mixer... You can even add software plugin effects & processors to the incoming external MIDI kit audio channels in realtime!
But... to run a setup like that where you have quite a lot of audio outputs coming from all your external MIDI gear, you are going to need more than the traditional 8 line inputs for your DAW, and this is also the case if you want to do larger audio recording projects using more than 8 microphones...
So here's a bunch of solutions for getting large audio input counts into your DAW...
