Yamaha are providing an OEM version of Emagic SoundDriver editing software for the FS1R. If you didn't get a copy with the instrument they'll send you one for free if you give them a ring.

It makes programming the FS1R a dream compared to trying to use the lcd even for just editing the effects it is superb, check it out.

You will probably want to download the update from Emagics site (www.emagic.de) which fixes a few bugs.

If you own an FS1R they'll send you one for free. New FS1Rs have a copy in the box, old ones didn't. They asked me for the serial number and I received it in the post 10days later.

call me stupid but how far removed is the fm programing in the fs1r from say the dx7 because i cant understand why people say its so difficult unless the fs1r is really easy

Good question, it's a bit more complex as you've 8 operators instead of 6 and a semi detached filter (doesn't know whether it's part of the program or the performance. Compared to programing an analog synth I find FM unpredictable. I can get some really good sounds out, but it's harder work than a decent analog/VA. The other problem is it isn't very tweakable in the way that analog is.

FM programing in general or FS1R is not very tweakable?

FM is not subtractive synthesis!

FM is a lot more complex than subtractive synthesis, especially when you stack operators (2op is simple enough) and use different ratios. There's no easy parameters like on a traditional analogue synth.

And IMO Yamaha made it harder than it should be with the interface on the FS1r... granted you have a few knobs, but the screen and the buttons are just too small. A SY/TG77 is a lot easier to use, same size screen as the big Emu samplers. A computer editor helps a lot.

I was just pointing out that fm isn't as tweakable in the same way most people are used to.My fave is the DX11= 4op w/ velocity keyboard. Can you say T99?
