Subject: That sound
Original Message 1/14 01-Oct-01 @ 09:52 PM - That sound
Looking for that eighties punch in my drums. Gating my snares helps but they're still not quite a crisp as I would like.
And my kicks aren't happening at all. In fact they sound quite dull. Instead of a nice warm 'wump' I get a dull 'thud'.
How did those eighties producers get such slamming beats?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

if my memory serves (and i assume you mean NON dance genre for the eighties?) then it'd be the result of using 80's drumbox samples & a touch of gated verb + compression???.....

that encompasses a lot of tunes. what exactly are you looking for? Lionel Richie or Hüsker Dü?

mind you if he means 80's dance?... well some of it was crisp and electronic and was the machines of the day, linn & simmons etc.. and some was analog and some was 12bit sampler and some was 16 bit sampler.. mixed on hardware boards, analog distortion often from hard driven channels, some fx.
i think you'll have to be more specific in what 80's music you mean really to get a more defined answer

Wow, thanks for the reply. Actually, I was referring to eighties dance, like George Micheal or Prince.

blimey... well.. oberheim DMX, emu's SP12 and SP1200, Linndrum, simmons modules (think any old SAW, Dead or Alive etc), possibly TR727 percussions, tr808, any of the possibly old 'beep-bloop' basic analog drumbox's (cheezey sounds like the KPR77 or Pearl drumbox ... also possibly the Sequential Tom (sequential drum-modules were quite good at the time)... & early samplers, mirage, akai & e-mu 12bit etc.

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!
