I've started doing d'n'b stuff and would like to know where everyone puts their sounds.
I refer to panning settings like a clock face i.e. 5 to, 20 past,12 noon etc.
Do you vary the panning according to the song or do you have set places etc?

low end shit up the middle. the most annoying shit off to the right (that way it's on the passenger side when checking a mix in a car, heh heh). otherwise where it seems to need to go. but it depends. on the song.

oh man there is just SO much you can do with panning, split & panning, delayed split panning, auto-panning, etc etc... use it to spread out your mid & top end of the mix (not all of it, but mix and match to get the effects & sense of space you want etc.

i tend to think in terms of width, not just panning. like, i want to have most of my sounds centered around the middle, but i want them to have different subjective width. thats when what kilo mentioned comes in. for drums i might make two copies of the same sound, pan them left and right and then treat them slightly differently. for pads and synthy stuff, use some sort of modulation to make sounds move across the stereo picture. etc etc... and yeah, keep bass in the middle for maximum impact.

My fav - pan left and delay the right channel by ~30ms so it sounds like its coming from the left side. Whats the name for this, anybody?

hm... repeating a sound with slight delay... i guess iŽd call it ADT (automatic double tracking). does anyone object? actually, it also has to do with Haas effect, where we register the signal which reaches us first as the sound source.

ah... just use your ears, willya!

top end stuff like hats and the top-end of acoutic guitars etc, BV's top-end etc can be nicely spread by delay-panning like that - send one side the dry and send the other a slightly delayed version.... it spreads it right out, or you can send the original BV or whatever centered or panned softer l/r and then use the delay send to a stereo delay to offset the wider panned stereo version and knock the tops & some mid out of the centered versions and split off the top-end for the panned version.... works good on hats etc those split slightly delayed pans, BUT watch out what happens in MONO - it can make weird things happen when it's sent out as mono....

you can alternate between delaying to the left and to the right a few milliseconds on material, but keep in mind this is phasing the sounds, and may alter what thye sound like in mono. I did it on a track to make the strings sound big, but in mono they disappeared.

I try and keep things narrow, no more than 10,2. Ocasionally I'll pan the delays or reverb out a little further. But you can go a little louder and punchier with more in the middle, and then it becomes a frequency, up down space instead of left right.
