I've got a rode ntk going through a focusrite trakmaster into the patch bay (behringer) at +4 then out into my terratec ews88mt soundcard, with the input selected at +4. I know valves are a little noisy, and the hum only bothers when i have to crank the gain up but should there be _any_ hum?
There was a huge hum at one point and a horribly thin sound from the mic, but i resoldered the xlr and it was better. Shall i just make up a new lead?

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

another thing i did was plug the xlr from the rode's transformer into my phonic mixer, the noise was there, but if you went past a certain gain it disappeared then appeared again when you cranked it more. doesn't make sense to me at all.
i might take it in to digital village and run it through their trakmaster, see what happens.
xoxos, what sort of gain do you have to push to get a good signal with your rode? my input gain is about 36+db on the preamp, which is where the noise starts to become annoying.
and i'm not going through the patchbay any more, so it's mic > preamp > soundcard. i've tried pluging the transformer in different sockets, some are noisier than others. and the trakmaster is nice and quiet on it's own.

I would bet that's your problem. Have you gone directy into the computer from your pre? Is your patchbay balanced? Is the terratec?

i'm thinking either the transformer or the mic itself is a bit shagged. still under warranty though
