I know it's not due for a couple of years, but what do you guys think? There have been several leaks already and all I've heard is good news about this OS. It looks like Microsoft might be really starting to compete with stable OS's.

Regards.

Steve.

No way, I'm seriously ed off about them building stuff into the bios to send info to their servers. I'm not gonna even look at it until I've got a crack thing to stop that happening. They have no rights to do stuff like that, it's just digital stalking when it comes down to it.

Don't forget that these points (sometimes even rumours) come along with a lot of major updates. Remeber Intel Pentium 3? They are usually left out or unfounded.

Erm... BIOS is firmware. It can't be modified by the OS. With XP you can turn the QOS network service off.

It doesn't modify it, it's in there from the start.
From what I was reading it has gone beyond rumour and AMD/Via/Intel etc. have agreed to build it into their chip sets etc.
Microsoft wouldn't have gotten away with the XP phone up code thing a few years ago but people are gradually letting them get away with more and more. Have you seen the prices of office lately?!!

I find it hard to believe all the chipset manufacturers would do this for MS. Do you have a reference for this?

I do too but generally it's such a rip. Can't remember where I read it, think it was in a pc mag or two but I'll try to find some more info.

Here's a couple articles relating to "longhorn" and the implementation of the Palladium into it and also in Intel chips.

From that SOS article: "Longhorn, probably some time during 2003, which might end up being the final Microsoft operating system to support PCI soundcards"

That's kind of interesting.

Scary. I hope that this gets a serious legal challenge from someone with deep enough pockets to really contest this.
