Subject: how does it sound ?
Original Message 1/19 28-Aug-04 @ 03:39 PM - how does it sound ?
warning: it is extremely repetitive (apart from the end break down), so if that makes you cringe, don't bother 'cause it'll annoy you for sure.
i thought maybe i should try to pan the mks "robo-laugh" around ?

mix sounds kinda barren to me, not alot of direction :- dropouts etc would just happen, rather than building in and out. I dont think theres 'fills' as such in this genre (is there) but something to give the track direction might have been cool.
just now it sounds like maybe a loop of 3 or 4 synths just being filtered about with random dropouts (albeit on time/sequence).
Mix, well theres not alot to comment on i guess, but it sounds really unprocessed to me (again im probably way off as i listen to diff stuff) but i guess i would say if you do nothing else, give the kick some bump.
A *thick* kick with *solid warm* bass could really get this swinging along. ( i can hear it as i listen, and its nice )

that, especially if you're a minimalist (which I would guess you are...). Imagine
Ritchie Hawtin yelling out a disclaimer like that at the beginning of a set. IMHO I
think that your opening needs to be a bit more additive. Start with less, try
muting a few more of the seq. steps at the start and build it up. That'll keep those
minimalist haters wondering, as most of them will confuse additive
composition with developmental composition anyway. The synth sounds
are beautiful, and it all really chugs along nicely. Your exploration of timbre and
colour is appropriate, and well executed.
Yes, pan it around. Pan everything around a bit more IMHO.
I always try to remember that when composing in a minimalist style, because
you're not focussing on harmonic development, your
audience will be actively looking for other elements to keep them
psychoacoustically entertained.
Your use of timbre and colour in your synth lines is probably enough for most ppl,
but you may want to use more panning delays for those trance heads that
happen to wander into the techno room.
Peaceout,
Peter

a little more background on how it was made. actually, all i have recorded to date hase been in the same fashion. dial in sounds on the synths, create a pattern or two and then fade in/out and sweep at the desk. i call them impromptus. so your spot on saying it has no direction, blu. i see them as proto-tracks, sketches (to give you an idea, this particular one was made in about 15 minutes). i feel when i'm more confident with how it sounds, i can then put time in planning the whole thing, drawing in volumes cc et al. as for it sounding unprocessed, again right on the mark. it's recorded straight with a touch of reverb (well, seems like a touch to me)
". Start with less, try
muting a few more of the seq."
i guess that's a side effect of "oh, let's record this" on the fly
"The synth sounds

i think we need a blushing emoticon, thanks. makes my day.
as for the warning, i feel it was appropriate in the context of asking for your opinion. if i go to hear plastikman, i know what to expect. you don't.
oh, and the kick, i have to agree with you blu, it still eludes me. maybe i should give compression another chance ? although i've read pages and pages about it, i must admit it's still over me
thanks again for the listen

maybe a little more low-end....may>be.
a bit on the detroit-side of things but that can be nice now and again.
a good browsy listen....for readers only?

blu, i don't think every style of music needs to let you know there's a drop coming.
only thing i don't like is the ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba baaaaaah
and yeah do something about that kick, ok at the start, gets kinda lost then, not much bottom end on it. try layering the kick, one version compressed for thud, the other eq'd for bottom end etc. watch the phase when you layer them up.
