Hi,

guys,

im almost at a stage where i wanna shop some house tunes around and wanna know who hear has had tunes released and how you did it...

Now im not looking to get signed but wanna get a record out if that makes sense? it seems to me in house that many artists do stuff for different labels-s eems in some cases its almost a song by song basis....

why would i possibly want to work with a record company? well i want my tunes mastered for the dance floor and released on vinyl- a number of mates said they'd buy and spin my tunes but thats a little different to being able to shift say 500 white labels- its not even profit im after just want some of my tunes out there to see how the general public like them

the mastering thing is because basically im wasting too much time tying to pro-up my tracks to what i hear in mastered versions- my levels and mixes are ok from my point of view but would want a pro touch before they were spun on the dance floor...

ive come a cross a list of house labels from mix mag im gonna hit up but to be honest im not expecting any replies (as i doubt the a&r will even listen) - any tips? experiences?

this is not trying to get signed which is a bit different

well knock yourself down mate, it happens all sorts of ways, i've had deals sent over just cos some guy visiting the studio cos of an advert in loot to sell something heard a tune and called up his label and basicaly they offered a album deal based on his judgement withoiut them hearing it

um other ways is just approaching labels cold calling, it can work.

I had a big Uk label owner once offer to sign a song based just on hearing the title name lol, (which was quite catchy & odd) "I'll sign that just on the title alone!" ok he was already courting another track so knew the quality was ok

I've had people want to take just a crappy cassette of a track in development to a club to be played that night and things come from that

other times deals come thru word of mouth cos mebbe the vocalist/rapper has been out blagging round clubs and met a label person at the bar etc

the only way i didnt get a result was mailing out demo's, but thats cos i never did it..

my experience is, if you have a band and it's got the x-factor, then within a few months or even weeks of going out live, labels will start calling you... promo is not required, word of mouth does it

with dance it can be the same tho. i mean come on checkout an average weeks house releases, alot of it is just um... deck fodder, but it gets released nonetheless

Fraction Records

Thats our record label & sub-label - we release vinyl, cd & digital. Not house mind you, prog & trance vibes, but the basis is the same if you have any q's on how its done!

we started of when i gave a cd to a friedn of a friend of a friend who owned a label, and it kind of snowballed from there

things have changed slightly over the last couple years due to the digital 'revolution' so its never been easier to get a 'release'. My advice would be to steer clear of any digital only labels - for the most part there run by guys in there bedrooms and you wont get the final pro master dancefloor polish your talking about through this, and 2, they from my viewpoint will sign and release almost anything becuase there is zero risk apart from the time taken to lash your file through L3 and upload it to 5 or less online digital stores whithout any form of decent promo other than a post or two on some web forums and myspace

I dont think this paste off of discogs will show up properly for the signalrunners stuff which is probs the most successfull alias we do and its not really complete, but here goes....

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

well i was about to start doing it but have this feeling 99% wont even get listened to so am looking for other ways..

"with dance it can be the same tho. i mean come on checkout an average weeks house releases, alot of it is just um... deck fodder, but it gets released nonetheless"

and this is what i find so mysterious- it all seems to happen so silently- there are thousands of producers and hundreds of labels- perhaps its better to send tracks on cd to dj's i like and see if that garners interest..... i know a guy who runs his own label, has released his own tunes and has a distribution deal and his stuff aint great (but then people are buying it) but that involves shelling oput quite a lot- which i just don't have...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

good advice, my friend who owns his label said that digital was the new route but i think he missed my point in that im not trying to get huge sales i want lots of people to play and hear it and the digital medium seems soley for the home listener-.. so think i will stick with the more traditional means... and plus the marketing thing is also not something i wanna get to into; i will if i have to but the more time i can spend on my music the better... my mates label had mentions in top mags and tunes were played and remixed by well known dj's so he is doing something right

i do have a myspace- originally got excited that i could add people like erick morillo or derrick carter as friends but soon realised their sites where just run by their PR and was no nearer to shopping my tunes to them... i thought maybe i was missing a trick but i guess the key is to garner label interest in a non-direct way

ill check out your label- thats an awful lot of releases!! so taking your first one:

Breathe / Recoil (12") Red Monkey Records 2004

whats the story? how did you get the interest? what did the deal involve?

well where's your music monkey? - you aint added any?

last year someone here got some abusive mails via the feedback form on artist pages (thats when i added in the random number code box fill-out) anyways because of that abuse, i started to randomly monitor messages passed thru the system for a while to check things and, have seen quite a few messages sent internaly relating to playing peoples tracks on radio shows, so every little helps, stuffing all your music on myspace only is a huge waste imo cos as my kid says and my freinds kids' say the same, "My space is no good now", there's just too many people on it for anyone to find you; they also moan about the search being useless to find new music cos you cant search properly

they all say they only keep using it cos it's convenient cos their freinds use it

anyways it's good to get your stuff around a bit... also there is an element in music biz like in the film biz of it being about 'Who you know'... contacts, chance meetings, freinds of freinds, etc, it's a very personal business the music biz.

one good way to get a handle on your tracks potenmtial I found (back in the day when i started) was to take stuff to specialist music shops on CD during a quiet weekday time and ask their opinion; I used to say "If i had this pressed would you be interewsted in stcking it?", then they;d play it, and you get good feedback cos they listen to all the new releases week in week out, and often they find stuff on white labels which becomes popular. So their feedback can be very useful.

haha, almost done- i read tip from olav basoski the other day which whilst extremeley obvious has been very helpful- it was 'just finish your tracks'

i tend to leave mine in a loop and then puzzle over where to take them....but now will just finish them and move on- so youc an expect some soon...and was intended on getting a space here as i have found myspace good fun but not really good for what i need..

nice one!! never really thought about that, reckon it could be very worth while- despite doing house music its a type of house so can't expect someone into prog/hard or vocal house to neccesarily dig my stuff but peeps who run these shops often know and respect many genres and would at leats know enough about that particular market... time to find out where my local shops are...

soudns like i just need to expand my network... i know one guy who's signed who likes my stuff but does deep/tech-house, another guy who hasn't heard my stuff but whose own isn't great and thats about it!! all the rest of my contacts are dj's and whilst its nice to know they'd spin my tunes they aint gonna pay for them to be pressed!!

all good stuff-

cheers

Mostly working with virus TI and software now really! Did just get a set of apogee dac's this morning tho, just the usb babies but still f*cking gnarly!

I see alot of virsu TI type synthy stuff on the horizons, will prob invest in some of that stuff, but for now im really pretty cool with the minimal approach. Can you get us some freebies from thomman for a bit of sponsorship aye?

It was really just a case of 'contact' i guess. I had burned a few cds to mail to some labels on the monday and on the saturday night i gave one to a freind who was a friedn of... type thing. Then i got an email on the monday saying they wanted to do it so I never bothered mailing anything out. we did a remix for the label for the release before ours to get the name out slightly. This was all before digital so there was probably a bit more thought went into it than now, becuase making a mess of a vinyl release is a bit more drastic than a digital release bombing.

Then for the next while we released tracks on a pile of diff labels, like the 'one offs' you say. Im not sure why, it just kind of worked out like that but we were putting tracks out on a lot of diff names (Nimmo&Bayer, Syndica, Team SR) on alot of diff labels but the main ones always been signalrunners. I suppose your subconciously building a big circle of industry contacts that way. Thats probably the most important thing to be fair, is having the circle of people who know who you are and what youve done. We're pretty much at the stage now where we're streamlined things down label wise over the last year or so. We own Fraction and are signed to Anjunabeats which is probs the biggest indie trance label so are happy to just work through these 2. thats really the story if thats what your looking for info wise

I dont know what it would be like for a newcomer now with the fall of vinyl and ease of digital, but i reckon it would be almost the same . i.e the first initial release is a bastard but once youve done it the next ones easier, and so on. and the more stuff your putting out the more people know who you are from past releases so they actually listen to the demo.

My house circle of friends isnt that big to be honest, but do listen to alot of house (pryda type) and I know a few people I could pass your stuff to if you think its good enough? We get probably upward of 50 demos a week to Fraction so if you want proper thoughts on your stuff send it through the label site and I'll give you some ruthlessly honest feedback, which is always the best kind!
