When it comes to doing drum and sample sequencer tricks and maybe digital audio, can laptop perform well? Iknow its going to cost much more this route, and what kind of specs should i look into the laptops to get away with something like cubase VST or Logic Audio. I'll probably use it for other application s too, like the net, games, etc. Thanks...

I dunno much about laptops, but wouldn't there be problems with getting a decent soundcard? I mean, you can't put shit in laptops, can you?.. (Docking Stations???) Given this, I'm getting a laptop soon (For free, haha!!) Probably a really slow machine, but I'm thinking about using it to control MIDI and letting my main computer deal with all the HD audio.. I dunno..

That's my exact intent, I want to just run MIDI with my NL1 and my soon to be sampler. From what I've been reading, the only sound card you can put in laptop are the PCM cards from Roland and the one from EMU. But I'm still wondering about how Cubase/Logicaudio/ Cakewalk will run on laptops, without using too much of its digital-audio components. Like what kind of spec can I get away with for MIDI control only...

I don't know the full range of PCMCIA cards available for laptops, but Roland make the Roland Sound Canvas SCP-55 (PCMCIA type II card for laptops), similiar to the SC-55ST with over 300 instrument sounds, drumsets, FX, reverb & chorus effects for spectacular sound imaging. Supports standard 16 MIDI channels. Additional features are included to process .wav files for complete audio production on your laptop.
I don't know much about it; I just read about it a couple of times..

Laptops can do anything a desktop PC can do, typically at triple the price.

I think you should get a cheap second-hand notebook,
nothing less than: 486, 16mb ram.
Then you get a midi interface + Cakewalk.
If you want a programable arpeggiator, download SEQ-303.
That's all you need for sequencing.

Cheers

Thanks Jonny,
Well I think its pretty obvious that I dont know too much about computer music, so VST is just for Digital Audio and not for sequencing and adding fx? Does cubase, cakewalk, or logic audio have software for just sequencing with no D/A stuff, guess these would be cheaper software?

And Why do you want an audio card if your just going to sequence with it?

Lars, if a cakewalk product has the word AUDIO in it, it's got audio. If not, it's only midi. eg. Cakewalk pro audio 6.0 or Cakewalk pro 6.0.

I'm not sure about other software.

Cheers
