Subject: HELP ON SY77's DISK DRIVE !!!! S.O.S.
Original Message 1/11 02-Apr-98 @ 06:18 AM - HELP ON SY77's DISK DRIVE !!!! S.O.S.
some advice about this one :
i have an sy77 and no complaints about the
synthesis engine itself ( though FM is a puzzling
way of synthesis). The trouble is with my Floppy
Disk Drive.
I first noticed that when i tried to load some of
my oldest .ALL files, the disk was recognized
as a BAD DISK. First i thought the disk was in
fact corrupted, but then it started happening
more often, even with newly formatted and
recently saved files. The only way i can
sometimes recover the information is by
loading Voice & Multi, and then Song & Pattern,
but this happens oddly.
Now i think it could be that the Disk Drive is
faulty or, in a better case, that the magnetic
head is dirty.
Is there any way to know what is the source
of this trouble?
In case it was the Drive: How could i clean the
magnetic head ? Should i replace the whole
drive ? Can i find the proper device ?
Should i turn my SY into plastic syrup and buy
a Yamaha Portasound ?
Thanks in advance

could be a problem with the adjusting of the magnetic head... I had such a problem some times ago with a Korg i3 keyboard... some files could be read, some not... but its hard to adjust a drive by yourself...
Check the following out: open your drive and take a look at the mounting screws of the head assembly... they are tighten? Any cables loose? Is any dust inside? Take an air-compressor and blow out the drive, clean the heads CAREFULLY with 70% ethylene-alcohol.
If all that dosnt help.... I think you have to buy a new one.

Well done !! FM-synthesis is the basic. Keep it up, never throw a FM-device away!

The first iŽll do is to try to fix it and then give you
some good news ( i hope ).
By the way, i didn't even merely thought about kicking
my SY and buying a Virtual Analog Thing.
I still love those head-hammering basses, and crunchy
NINdustrial squirks you get boosting the ( configurable )
feedback loops. Of course physical modelling is great
but i'm still exploring RCM.
Add some naughty effects, a couple of samplers, some RY30
killer loops, a pinch of guitar riffs, and you got it.
