RWOOOOOOAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH

DAMN!

Ok. I got a hold of a DBX 386 which is a "tube" mic pre...has inserts on the back, and a DA converter (which i thought would be nifty)

I figured I could use these two as a tracking path so I could get that...awww you know...thick...tubes...fat...blah blah blah

but FCK me if this just aint workin!!!!!

I know the 386 works cuz I had to take it to the damn shop cuz some asshole on ebay pawned it off on me semi-broken (claiming it was perfect) so..its fixed...and its getting and passing signal...

but i have to CRANK the inputs and outputs ALL THE WAY full to get a hot signal out the SPDIF out (coax) and it doesnt do SHIT to the sound!!!!!!!!! well...doesnt sound like it at least

then theres the inserts. Puttin that little rinky meek C2 on there...everything seems cool...but FCK ME if some WEIRD shit aint happenin...

dammit I would have to take NOTES to explain this shit...

for starters..if I turn the input down on the C2 (its a stereo unit, so...) then the left side still plays out on a stereo sound....but then when I turn it up...the right side fills in?

you know what? FCK THIS SHIT. This is just too much for me. God Damn soundcard sounds FINE on its own...so screw this...

I gotta admit its well-nigh impossible for me to just let something go when its not working..I want to know WHY?!?!?!

one thought...Im using balanced patch cables in an unbalanced patchbay..any reason why that would be a problem? Damn GC didnt have the unbalanced ones MFers...

I suspect that has something to do with this nonsnse...

There are two kinds of line level signal, consumer and pro. It's just cheaper to make synths with consumer level line outs I guess because there are few that have balanced outs.

Why the fuck is this anyway????

Get the UAD... the 1176 is all the phat you need.

I have the UAD-1.

Im trying to avoid falling for the 'tube craze' but...

heres the thought in the back of my mind..new question..is there a difference going THROUGH something vs applying it later?

I wonder the same about FX? I just wanted something to track THROUGH..

soundcard is an RME digi96/8. solid for sure...

There is a difference in going through or applying after. I think the general consensus among the highbrows is to go through, capturing the best signal possible from the get go. My own philosophy is a polar opposite. I prefer to just get a good clean signal, and then do my mucking about with it after I've got it tracked. The folks I've done vocals for seem very happy with that approach once they get over gear-envy.

As for tracking synths and what not, maybe a little more preprocessing gets done, but usually just synthesis, I still go pretty dry onto HD.

I do know that over the last few months I've been doing more and more "inside the black box," wasn't trying to, just seemed to end up that way. But anyhoos, for me tracking through stuff is usually a secondary choice, but the applying after apporoach is also what I'm used to doing (largely from not having much gear and PC power when I initially got into this...old habits die hard...)...

hmmm.

Im having a hard time letting go of the idea that Im gonna have 'too digital' of a sound if I just go straight into the computer...

which is why I wanted something to go THROUGH...

I figured out one of the problems. Had ONE bad insert cable, which was what was fouling up the C2 being able to work properly....

yeah. I just spent the morning and afternoon fuckin with the thing

it comes down to the fact that the virus just has a not so hot output...it really doesnt hit the inputs on the preamp hard at ALL, and to get a proper digital signal OUT I have to crank the ins and outs...which adds a LOT of noise

so...fuck it. done deal, no mas. Im gettin rid of BOTH.
