man don't sweat it, do you have a drum machine?
The argument over hardware/software is a hard one, but I reckon
one thing - buying a drum machine is no waste of money, even
if you never use it in a mix, you'll learn heaps on beat creation
and you'll be able to transpose those ideas to computer easily.
Make sure the drum machine you get has the feature to add "swing"
and "triplets", and as a bonus the ability to add 5/4 7/8 etc..., timing.
I have an RM1x, which does these things but I wouldn't recommend it
as a drum machine - its too big and not quick enough to program, everything takes two button presses to do! I actually wish I had a smaller drum machine with
batteries so I could sit down and do sh*t say at the park or something.

A buddy of mine has a 505 that I've messed with a bit. I understand a bit about drum machines. right now I'm using the one in Reason. It seems to do the trick, except I would really like a midi control surface of some sort.
I have an EA-1, which might be able to take some pressure of my mouse use.

I wish could control soft synth drum machines via externally or via the keyboard too.
The EA-1 is good, but I understand its only bass?
mebe an ER-1 or ES-1 something
to complement it? Except I'm not sure if they do triplets.
BTW: K is right, bass and drum's do go together. I've found that too!
You can do the same on computer (obviously), its just that its harder to practice,
IMHO.
If you sit down infront of the TV and screw about with a drum machine everyday,
pretty soon you'll be listening to a song and recognise the drum beat, and even
be able to imagine what it would look like on your drum machine, HiHats and all.
Plus you will even be able to hear which parts the bass falls on in the beat.
Anyway I'm just repeating what I wrote, anyway.

coupla q's for steve:
is that closehat shuffle done by a cubase groove quant preset, or is it done by hand? I would think moving the notes one by one would give best results....
also, what do you mean about drum tuning? I'm trying to figure out different ways to fuk wit the samples in Wavelab before loading into a sampler... I was going to take some likely samples and kill some of the decay to avoid using gate plugins, so maybe I should pitch them as well...
any comments welcome...

its done by hand, I`ve never really got into the groove preset thing. It wasn`t until I posted the beat that I noticed I`d swung an 8th note too on the 2nd bar which I prolly shouldn`t have done, but anyway - all I ever do is move the 2 main snares either a few ticks forward or back, leave all other 8th notes straight quantised and then swing the 16ths.
I just tune the drums using pitch, as long as you stop the sequence before pitching stuff up and down your ears get time to adjust and it doesn`t sound ridiculous. Gating your drums on the edit screen in cubase would prolly be easier, just adjust the note length till it feels right.

HA! thanks for that one... I didn't even realize that happens until you said it... no wonder transposing bass always sounds crap at first...
