Hi!
I just got my nova yesterday, and of course I LOVE it.
Ok,now here are some nice boring questions you all nova users must have answers to.:o)
Actually I'm using cakewalk's instrument definition for the the nova.So far, nothing wrong.
BUT how come I'm forced to use the performance mode to use the nova as a multitimbral instrument?
What I mean is that a multimbral setup forces me to create a NEW performance and of course SAVE IT,which implies erasing a factory performance.I still want these performances for the moment though. So how come I can't use different programs set to different midi channels without using a performance????????
For example, when I want to use different sounds from my MC505, I just set the correct patch in cakewalk, its midi channel and that's it.
With the Nova, it seems you can't do it that way:if I set the patch in cakewalk and give it a midi channel, I can't use other programs at the same time....The only way to do this is use the performance mode.
I read 20 times the manual and I can't believe this.Am I missing something?
Thanks for answering those basic questions.....and merry christmas to all of you!:o)

don't get it??... surely you just select a default performance where you've set it up to assign parts 1-8 to channels 1-8 or whichever prefered channels - then just select the patches from your sequencer on a channel by channel basis, once saved, when you send out a reset from the appropriate sequence, it should call up the sounds desired to the appropriate channels..?.. no? - i mean if i take the time to setup a performance, once it is setup i can reselect & change sounds on any channel just by selecting it from the sequencer Patch_names list and hey presto the sound is assigned to that channel... or have i missed something here?

No "k",I can't do what you are saying and here's why:my intrument definition of the nova for cakewalk lets me select "program bank A", "Program bank B","performance bank A", "program change look up table" and some other options for apergios. So let's say I want to use perf 126 with 2 programs assigned to channel 1 and channel 2 (for part 1 and part 2).
Anyway, thanks Sitar for your help,I'm gonna try this right now.

I go into Cakewalk, create a track, set it to channel 1, choose "performance bank A" and "patch #126".Now do you all actually see the problem?:o)If I choose "performance bank program A", I can't specify what patch I want to use with it!The only way would be to save the performance in my nova.
From there I thought I could use program banks only:I created two tracks, assigned them to channel 1 and 2 and selected "program bank A patch 56" and "program B patch 48" for each. When I pressed play, only one sound could be heard...Well, that was no real surprise to me since the nova's multitimbrality only works in perf mode.

Ooooooh finally it's working!!!thanks a lot to you Sitar!Actually, I didn't realize that each time you swith off the nova, all the data are reset. So the global channel would always go back to 1.THANK YOU!
Just one LAST question:I can't figure out what "program change look up table" in my sequencer is for.I checked the manual but it's totally unclear (guess why) and I don't really know how to use it.
Anyway, thanks a lot once again to you, and to all the others who took some of their time to help me.
Merry christmas to all of you!!

Yes! But fvicente got it. Credit where due. Now whenever you want to you can set up your own default preformance. "Program change look up table"? You mean in Cake? Don't know. I'm not at home so I can't even check. Merry Christmas.

Hi,

The reason that the Nova is switching back to Global channel 1 is that you are not saving the global parameters. You need to press the 'Write' button after changing the Global midi channel. After that, the Global channel will be whatever you set it at. You may need to switch the memory protect setting to off before taking effect but I'm not sure. Try without turning memory protect off.

Hope this helps and have a Merry Christmas everyone!

Fernando

If you are writing to save parameters, global or otherwise, memory protect has to be "off". When memory protect is on it doesn't allow anything to be overwritten.

Thanks a lot, everything is working fine now.Does anyone just know what the parameters included in the instrument definition such as "arpeggios" and "program change look table" mean?
I mean, why should I set a channel on "arpeggio" to record arppeggios? Can't I just do it normally by assigning the arpeggio trans channel on the nova?

I'm really not sure about that one. I haven't used arpeggiation very often. I know that I have set up the arpeggiate parameters on the Supernova itself to play into Cake. If I remember correctly, I wrote the parameters down in File/Info from the Cake menu. I don't think that the SN automatically received arpeggiator messages and played it back. That's why I wrote it all down. I'll have to try it again. I believe that I've also arpeggiated a Supernova program from my keyboard controller. I've never arpeggiated from Cake itself...only recorded the arpeggiated part into a Cake channel. I should look into it more....obviously. It would be great if the SN played back the arpeggiator that's played into Cake. I suspect it can, but I don't know. Maybe the manual has something to say about it.
