P266 processor,64 memory,4gig dedicated hard drive. I have distortion in cubase and none in
cakewalk express using audio tracks known to be good. It works so, so, sometimes and then next time I'm up, distortion??. I have played with all
the controls in mixer and volume with no avail.
I have removed cakewalk and did everything mentioned in cubase troubleshooting manuel. If you know anything, please respond. also, asio has
sb picked as choice. Changed the card three times. Thanks.

direct-x 6 is there... get it downloaded, then re-install the card... but first remove it, and all it's drivers... and clean out the registry by typing at the START-RUN command... REGEDIT.....
search and find any entries for your card, and remove them.....
then get the latest 64 drivers... there is at creative (i went yesterday)... a driver that it says fixes problems with some digital recording programmes.... choose the comprehensive FTP menu... which gives file descriptions... (middle one of the three)....... get the latest Creative drivers.... install the direct-x 6 (3mb download).... then DONT let windows install the creative card, cos you get all that creative junk added with the drivers... just do add-new-hardware... follow the prompt... reply: NO, when it asks to search for the hardware..... click 'HAVE DISK', and add the driver.... try that.....
also, if the card is Fake full-duplex, maybe it's an idea to check the 'FULL-DUPLEX' setting in the ASIO setup....... try it with this item DE-ticked..... try it set to : 'OPEN ALL INPUTS FIRST', maybe that might help??...... i setup a VST system with a crappy soundbaster yesterday for a client.... and it took about 3 hours of changing drivers and messing about.... but finally worked ok.... check also the windows multimedia mixer settings....... good luck....

I had a similar problem that was caused by RealPlayer being CRANKED up too loud
It seemed that the RealPlayer was acting as a main Vol.Controller.
Hope it helps if not tuff shit

Message 19/19 12-Feb-99 @ 09:19 PM - OKE HERE IS THE ANSWER !!!!
I'am also the owner of a AWE64... the answer is infact very simple... and their is a solution... more or less...
TWO FACTS :
1) The awe64 is basicly a very SLOW card when it comes to Direct Control (try playing fifa99,sin, etc. with a AWE64... - causes distortion or missing sounds)
2) Cubase is basicly a very SLOW program that mixes sounds (uses a lot of effects, parameters etc...)
because cubase is so slow it requires a fast soundcard... (not the awe64) when the soundcard is to slow strange things can happen like distortion (in most cases by cubase)
SOME SOLUTIONS :
1) The speed of the AWE64 can also be degraded by the drivers... installing new drivers (including directx) may help !!!
2) Buy an extra soundcard (with a DIGITAL OUT) not an expensive one just a simple 16bit soundcard with DIGITAL OUT (I have heard that these things can be very simple created - search on '+electronics +digital +out +soundblaster +cheap')
3) Buy a faster computer - when the computer is faster your awe64 is faster (drivers react faster etc. etc.)
4) Mess around with the ASIO settings... may help...
