I'm looking to add a h/w compressor to my studio. I have some good s/w ones, but I miss the ability to compress things realtime while I'm composing and arranging. I have a nice unit (Focusrite Tonefactory) that has some simple adjustments for recording acoustic things (voice included), but I'd like to add something that has all the features. I'm looking for a unit that has the following features...

1. Full control of Attack, Release, Threshold, Ratio

2. LOW LOW LOW noise

3. Dual Mono (for compressing a bassline and a kick drum simultaneously

4. $500 or less (US)

The units that have been recommended to me are the Presonus ACP-22 (I had a bluemax that was quite good and I am leaning towards them for product loyalty), a dbx160, the HHB Fat Man, a Summit box and a Joe Meek. Because I have a good mic-pre in the Tonefactory, this unit will only be used for instruments, and again, a LOW noise floor is very important. Thanks.

I may have to take a trip to Foxboro, MA - they distribute them but I don't know if they're in stock. Not sure how you try out a compressor, though...

Psy - your experience is that they probably won't achieve the sound I am looking for. Is that correct? From what I've heard from Pongoid's music, a thumping compressor is very important. Seems like you guys have had a VASTLY different experience with the same box.

well, it depends on what he uses it for. Plus he owns it, so I'm sure he really knows how to use it.

pongoids stuff never sounded very compressed to me, quite the contrary actually. so i wouldnt exclude psy´s opinion on this one. i´d say pongoids thump comes from programming and the soundsource.

compounder still sounds like your best bet. from smooth to thumping, its supposed to deliver the goods.

you want grit and aggressive style sound right?

compounder is damn cool. DBX 166x

better yet..honestly darin...buy a Universal Audio UAD-1. for $600 you get 1176LN, LA2A, and the CS-1 compression isnt exactly something to turn your nose up

PLUS Pultec EQ, RealVerb Pro (me gusto mucho altho others bitch about it) and MORE...all on its own DSP...

honestly...get that thing and you wont look back

oh shit...youre running sonar tho. dunno bout that...

anyone? DX wrapper to use UAD-1?

Not discounting Psy's experience at all, simply pointing out that there was a difference of opinion (possibly) on something fundamental. Probably shouldn't speak for Ape, as he does a good job of that on his own. What's up Ape?

all the reviews i've read about the rnc say it doesn't do "character", transparent all the way, hard to get it to pump, et c.

UAD-1 is s/w, right? I already have some s/w compressors that I like, but I can't really use those while composing. I'm looking for a h/w compressor.
