two problems:
-i press the on button and the cd drives starts whirring then nothing else happens, i have to hit the reset button about 8 times before it fires up properly
- when it does start up it has begun freezing on the page where the Windows logo appears for the first time.

It is a 700 Athalon Pc, any ideas what the trouble might be?

thanks
mathew

well i'd try disconnecting all but the C/boot drive - I had all 4 drives fail on me a few weeks back on on box and after power down and wiggling the cable it booted fine - so i'd just check the ide cables by isolating the drive and checking the cable plugs are in fully.... you never know... sounds like your boot sector is ok tho mebbe...

I know EXACTLY what this is. Don't mean to sound overconfident, but I had spooky problems just like that and so did the computer I built for my mom.

Your power supply is probably going. Do you have another one to pop in?

Or do what K said and disconnect all drives except your boot drive and see how it goes with less power draw.

I also had similar problems due to an old, overheating video card. You might want to swap that out as a test.

same installing a new soundcard in pc w/ all irq slots filled. sometimes it helps to try things in different slots, sometimes it helps to give up on that extra card.
