I have an akai s-950 and a tr 909. I am trying to make a repetitve disco or voice sample. Can this be done with just these 2 things? If so how? Do I need another device to trigger the sampler?

the 909 has a mode where it can play an external track as it plays it's drums- see the 909 page i though someone added that info - and check some in-depth 909 sites to see how -

aha -

The 909 can also sequence an external sound source, with it's
'External-Instrument' setting, which accesses a new pattern mode,
where you can programme a pattern to go with every internal drum
pattern.... this accompanying pattern will only trigger an external
device....and is limited to 16 notes, but you can have an 'External'
pattern play with every internal drum pattern..... and of course, you
can hear the external synth being sounded, and the internal 909
drums at the same time to work with if you're making a bassline or
whatever..... You just have to set the unit into 'External Instrument'
when you access 'Pattern-Write' mode.

Ok. Now my problem is that the sampler is only playing a second of the sample when it is triggered. I would like to hear the whole sample repeat it self. The only way I can hear the full sample is pressing the playback button. All I want to do is have the sample repeat on each step. sheesh.

On an S2000, you would want to go under sample->edit , scroll down to 'looping' and select 'one shot' I use this for all my phrase samples, loops, and vocal snippets.

or alternatively, on your sampler, find any parameter that does the same.... it may be in the amp-envlope settings or whatever, there maybe also a special One-Shot type mode on yours (probably there is).... you just have to set it up so that any midi note length (such as a 16th note) causes the sample to playback all the way to the end once triggered..
