anybody know how to assign specific samples to specific midi channels (ie. pad one ch.1 pad 2 ch.2 etc?) can you help me out?

Umm....
What Exactly are you trying to do?

Do you want the samples to be triggered by an external sequencer? If so....

WHY?? Half the point of the MPC is that it is a sequencer?

If you're just trying to trigger external sounds using individual pads, well...

You have to pick a track, assign the track to "drum" rather than "midi" mode and set the midi channel (i.e. 01 device01 or whatever it says) to whatever channel you want. Then the pads will play the external instrument chromatically depending on which pad you hit. (note: pads are automatically arranged in crazy-whack mode where the pads have no spatial relation to pitch) ....
