Which is the best synth for those smooth deep sub-bass sounds? Anyone?

I've gotten some nice results from an SH-101, a Juno-106, and a new addition to my family......a MIDIMINI. I would say the 106 has gotten the most use so far though (from me).

The SUB OSC on the 106, and also the 101, seems to help out quite a bit. I don't (although I've read it's a popular choice of others) use the 106 in "unison" mode....I just don't like the sound in that mode. The bottom still shakes my building in poly mode.

The TX81Z is nice too... You can do some nice bass sounds by using a little programming skill.

Best bottom end bass stuff with mid range definition I've come across is an old Jen SX1000. lervely, cheap but a bit hard to find.

I've got a Korg DSS-1 that's a cross between sampling/Analog and FM synthesis...

Raw sine-age FM bass stuff w/ loads of analog filters...you can make your speakers FLAP...

Check out the June issue of Future Music. There's an article/interview with RIP ("Ripgroove"), in which they discuss some gear they use for their speed garage bass sounds. Favorites include the DX100 and the Juno-106, as well as sine and square waves from an Akai S3000 and CD3000. You can also spot a TX81Z in a rack of their gear, but they don't have it in their kit list.

In a sidebar interview, they discuss layering the 'Jazz Organ' on the DX100, "with some of the higer tones taken out - which leaves you with a fat warm sub - then you layer that up with whatever... the wah-wah sample or something from the Juno 106."

Though the Bass on the DX 7, etc is excellent, I find FM to be a bit thin, which is a normal characteristic of those synths. You can juice it with a harmonizer or a subhormonic synth(DBX is excellent) and get the best of both worlds: a grainy 12 bit bass with top notch low frequencies.

I would like to take this oppurtunity to express my admiration for you guys. The dance/techno crowd has impressed me with thier knowledge, innovative techniques and techsharing. kudos guys!

Any good sources in the net to read on FM synths programming ?
Plan to use Generator 1.53 to build those deep sounds.

Korg mono poly is good for some deep bass sounds, but I have to agree the Juno 106 can kick some ass. i fucked a pair of speakers up once due to the frequency was so low the woofer damn near fell out. Also the Akai3200xl is good if you use the sqare wave. Though one of my friends built this thing and it is a thing due to there are no better words to describe it. That produces the lowest and nastiest bass sound I have ever heard. though it is not midi and it has no keyboard and it is really hard to tune. you just have to sample the sound and fuck around with it. Also my gradfather produces some sonic bass out of his ass when he lets one go. though it smells really bad. has anyone ever sample a fart? wow put it through some filters and slap a square wave on it. it might sound good. Talk about original.

se-1, microwave, cs-5, juno-60, Pulse, ms-10, Serge, Buchla, vcs-1, Matrix12, Expander, E3, etc, pretty much anything with a decent 24db lo-pass VCF should give you a pretty fucking solid bass tone. You really just have sit down, test the units out, and decide what character you feel best suits you. Digital basses like the dx100 are pretty cool, but the truly deep hit still comes from VCF's. Analog! (I'm not an analog snob. I just believe in using the most solid tools to do the job.)

yup... fm rules for speed garage.... the FM square wave double oscillator bass, detuned, with sometimes alot of fast but shallow pitch modulation, that is a very popular sound.... as well as that analof S700 type sound.... heavey chorus type thing.......

Trade secret - get a Casio VZ-1 and a PhD in programming the Casio VZ-1. Alternatively Yamaha TX81z, Casio CZ-1 or 1000, Korg Poly 800 or Roland SH-101 can all bust cones. You can get some big but strange basslines out of the synth section on a Casio FZ-1 if you can be arsed. If you just want bass without hassle get a 101.
