Why not try buying some magazines, an incredible source of knowledge ! Try "sound on sound" or "The Mix" or why not "Future Music". There are of course tons of books on the subject ( ya know the ones made of paper, not digital)

Well, it all depends on what you want to do, how you work, and how much money you're willing to pay. Any more information regarding this would help in giving advice.

But as always I recommend a sampler. If you're willing to pay the esi32 is an excellent choice - great filters with OS3, decent polyphony and fairly easy to use. I have one and it's the piece of equipment I use the most (but then I'm fairly much samplerbased..)

For something more synthy you could get a CS1x (they're really cheap right now, but it might be too similiar to your mc303..), or something more analogue to get some bite into the sound, like an Alphajuno or something like that.

A few digital synths could be fun too, like Casio CZ101 (or bigger), Kawai K4 or Yamaha FM (DX7, TX81z, DX11 and a few others). Check out the startup pages here for some more hints as well.
