i realize their is no "best" card, that everyone has opinions, etc.
But if YOU only had a $100 bucks and wanted to get decent sound what card would you buy ?
I'm new at this but I'll give you an idea of what I've been doing so far. I have a copy of cool edit and I use the rebirth demo to make drum tracks and loops. I'd like to be get my electric bass into the whole mix as well as some vocals. Is using cool edit to grab bits of sound from commercial cd's and looping them considered sampling ?
If so then I also need decent sampling capabilities. As you can see I'm not very sophisticated about this, yet and would like a few suggestions. Will the dbx50g do the trick ?

Any advice is appreciated

I would recommend the Soundblaster Live Value. You can't beat this card in value for the money. 64 voice polyphony of sampling capabilities, up to 32 meg of sample ram using your system's ram. EMU sells excellent sample sets for $30 and under. If you want to expand it later with digital i/o, Creative is coming out with a digital i/o add-on card with (I think) both optical and coaxial connections. For $100, you can't beat the capabilities of this card.
