Check http://www.musicians-gear.com ...

It's just 10 pounds cheaper than Esi-4000! Why is that?

Good question?! There doesn't seem to be any appreciable difference between the feature set of the ESI4K and the ESI2K. I *think* one or the other came with fewer individual outputs on the stock model but it was hard to tell from the descriptions/ PDF sheets at E-mu. That doesn't make it any less of a good sampler but, IMO, it should at least be able to import/export .WAV and .AIFF files - which it can't. Did they even bother to update the ESI OS from v3.02? Personally, I feel the new E5000 Ultra is a much better way to spend money (if you can save up the difference.) If the warranty and new, in box is unimportant to you - go for a 2nd hand model (ESI32 or ESI4K).

sure, but remember, esi4000 is a product at the end of its lifespan, its being sold for half of what it did when it first came out. i dont know the conversion on deutchmarks, but in the us an NOS esi4000 goes for 850 and ive seen esi2000s advertised at 899. that means that the 2000 probably lists at 1000, and the 4000 listed at 1600.

the decrease in list price tells me that they probably re-engineered for parts cost.

id rather have a 4000. My guess is that the parts are of better quality. Besides, it just LOOKS better. the 2000 is ugly imho.

vctribe explanation is plausible. I agree but, I don't think the ESI-2000 is *that* ugly ;-) More along the lines of 'so ugly it's great' - ha ha
