I've got a CZ-101...nice machine for the bucks. It makes such nice evolving pads.

The output of mine, though, is a little grungy...sort of like the output is digitally distorting a little.

Just curious...Is this normal on CZs? Is there a fix? I actually don't mind it that much, it adds some needed low fidelity to my setup.

Roshi,

Over the years I've had a couple CZ101s and a CZ1000, they all had this quality. They are not as clean sounding as their bigger brothers in Casio family (the VZ line). To be honest with you I love the grunge. They are great synths and a steal for what they usually go for. Wide range of sounds and don't forget that you can stack sounds.

Best wishes, Mike

Thanks for the info, Mike. I just love my CZ to death.

I'm convinced that Boards of Canada use it as one of their main synths, for some reason. All their pads seem to have that CZness that's been treated by analog tape or something like that.

Hi Ted,

You're welcome. I know how you feel about the CZ! There are some sounds it does that no other synth can do.

Don't know the band you're talking about (I live under a REALLY huge rock!). Sounds like they might be work taking a listen to though

Best wishes, Mike

i will listen to the boards of album tonight. if you want noisy and grungy, try using the chorus slider on my cz5000. the slighty earthy feel on such a synthetic sounding keyboard is great. and the sound also works perfectly with the vz range.

If you're looking to lose the grunge for a particular application, I discovered on the CZ-1000 that I used to use that if I backed off the instruments volume slider to about 75% and used the mixer to make it up, that the distortion was minimized.
