My machine needs a clean up. Thinking of putting on Win 2000 instead of the existing Win 98 OS.
Is this a good idea for a machine used mainly for music ???

Yes if you set it up to be a dual boot system with Windows 98 for music and Windows 2000 for everything else. That way you can keep a nice clean system for music avoiding the usual conflict problems.

I don't think you would get acceptable midi timing or midi to audio synchronisation on Windows 2000.

You should be able to find instructions on dual booting Windows 98/2000 on Microsoft's site.

Well then, there's always Windows ME. It should be put soon. Wait for the news. As for its reliability, reports say that it is more stable than WIN98. Haven't tested it out personally though.

It's shipping now. I have also not tested it.

Really people, I've had stable machines with Windows 95, 95 OSR2, and 98. Don't put anything on it you don't need to make music. Hell, I even surf the web on mine!

Isn't ME supposed to have the same driver core as Win2K? As in devices need only have drivers for 1 OS, not seperate drivers for 95 and NT?

Why buy ME when you download practically all the components off the web for free. Cubase and Logic seem to run best on 98SE. Do you really want to give Microsoft any more money?

The problem with 2000 which is essentially NT5 is that NT was never intended for multimedia. Direct hardware access isn't allowed, so forget trying to get audio in or out at low latency.

Anyone know if ASIO drivers can work with Windows 2000, pretty essential for most Cubase 5 users I would have thought.

Never had a major problem with any of the win9x versions either.

I've always kept drivers up-to-date and pulled in the microsoft updates.

I run the music apps, games, Internet Explorer etc.. and haven't had a huge problem yet.

It's worth noting though that I've always gone for standard tried-and-tested motherboards, chipsets, cards etc...

The thread was actually about Win2000, hence my comments.

We don't know if ME is any good for running Cubase or Logic yet, these applications are highly tuned and it doesn't take much to upset them. Given that you can get them to run very well on 98 I can't see any reason to upgrade.
