RIGHT..... after months and months and months of relentlesly wazzing around with system settings etc.... this snippet of info has seemed to have sorted it..... and it comes NOT in the section for the audio setup...

In the menu OPTIONS, there is SYNCRONISATION...... set the PRE-ROLL too a high number 1000..... and the PPPQN to 96..... OK it, and exit...

Then go back to the Audio Setup section... set priority to LOW.... Audio Sequencer mode if you are using short bitz of audio, as opposed to long continuous tracks (most dance stuff)....... then set the ASIO setup....

make a bar of 16th drum notes in drum map...... that is 1 bar of 16th notes in a line at full volume.... use a snare drum or whatever..... make sure when doing drums, the Snap is set lo, to 64th's... that means each drum hit is only a short note to trigger the drum sound on your soundcard or drum box......

now... copy the bar over so it is 4 bars long... and loop it on the transport so it is going round and round.....

Go to ASIO Setup.... Try testing between DMA-OUT, and Sample Position - OUT.... see which works best... on one system with a Tahiti.. (NOT supposed to be a compatible VST card at all, it doesnt work well, with SamplePosition... but is OK with DMA Out.....

THAT sorted My Tahiti Tester machine, and I thought i was going to have to get a new card etc etc......

if you need a higher note resolutuion that (^ Pulses Per Quarter Note... (which I VERY much doubt for dance material.... go back to the Sycronisation setup, and increase it in steps.....

..... Once that is done, you can then try messing with the Buffers per track, and buffer size..... lower the better that works and remains stable......

Finaly... before running VST... do command CTRL ALT DELETE.... and remove anything running in the list apart from SYSTRAY & EXPLORER which are needed by Windoze

Also... Go to POWER, in Control Panel..... and de-tick the box in Disk-Drives, that says 'Hw long windows will wait before puting the disk drives in Low power mode'... this may not be neccessary, but once I had adjusted the pre-roll, the timing radically improved, but it would crash at random times...Just lock up totally... I have 4 drives in the system, so I figured maybe something was going on with a dis-used drive whilst working that was locking up the buss somehow... I dunno if this is even correct... but it seemed to stop the lock-up, unless it was a coincidence

I did all thsi, and unbeliveably, It RUNS !!!!.... It has not crashed so far.... (make sure there is NO screen saver active to cut in and fuck it up)..... and the timing of the rolls, whilst not quite as robotic as the Atari or hardware units, is adequate to compose on... if i want it tighter, i can dump the midi file over to the atari or hardware unit for the mix, syncing VST to chase, to play the audio.....

Well.... there ya go.....I have seen no mention of this pre-roll factor noted anywhere before.... and In my experience, pre-roll is always to do with syncing to an outside source..... and after all, it is in the syncronisation section which is specifically to do with that protocol,... However, it seems that somehow, this influences the midi timing ??... god knows how?.......

Happy hunting...... I aint saying this is 100% the answer.... I did run vst for 1.5 hours as a test, and it didn't crash.... that has never happened before... it used to freeze up at least every 10-20 minutes before..... ok.. I may try it again another day, to find it is freezing again,.... but whatever... that pre-roll is definately in the equation BIG-TIME !!... I now have a very reasonable timing, that could be used to do a track....

now i have to try it with alot of midi & audio running to see what happens..So far it ran without flaw for the 1.5 hours with 3 audio parts, 5 eq's, and a reverb or delay FX plus a few midi tracks...Not alot...... But I just posted this, cos before, I could not even get past the basic setup of acheiving a solid midi clock, and no crashes....

good luck

yes... DEFINATELY greyer !!...... I am totally shocked cos Pre-roll?????... what the fuck ??>.... how on earth can that come into the equation??..... well, if it works like that with a tahiti & eide on a 200mmx, maybe I'm gonna get a P2 after all... or... bump up the 200 to 256mb of s-dram might be more sensible... I dunno... I still don't trust it yet.... if it works for a week when the studio is set up, then I'll consider it...

By the way... talked to Steinberg UK Dist' yesterday,,,, they promised to gimme a free copy of VST to send off to my PC builder contact.... this company builds PC's in 20+ locations world-wide, with a multi-million dollar turnover... eg... one client in the UK orders 900,000 pounds worth of PC's per month !... so they build ONLY for trade un-badged....

Ok... so VST copy goes off to them, with Terratec cards from Terratec (loan)... and I have to get some loan Event cards too......

The pc builders have said they will get their top tech-bot to build a bench system for testing , and go thru different motherbaords etc to establish a primary config for each system combination of card & VST......

I'm particularly interested in the Asus board with the adaptec 8080 controller on-board .... alot of people say on-baord SCSI controllers are shite and can cause probs, BUT.... if it works ok, it'd be great as a system....

anyways Clemens..... the idea is to arrive at a solid VST unit config in a variety of price ranges.... to sell here via dancetech when the on-line store gets going.... !!... ready to go 100% guaranteed to work systems....... warranteed etc... and, it would be nice I think to maybe bundle in with the deal, a certain CD-rom VST Tutorial disk eh ??..... comprendez?

Well, as I know, thereīs a dealer here in Germany, called ASTERISK, who offers such bundle PCīs, as well.

Basis of these systems is a 19`` rack housing with following components built in:

- 233 MHz motherboard or better
- SCSI interface
- min. one SCSI HD
- CD ROM and optional CD writer
- in bundle with Soundcard (Terratec, Gina, and... ??)
- VST or Logic or SEKdīs HD recording Samplitude PRO or
with Creamware equipment.

Another PC dealer with PCīs for musicians is CHERRY.
Same strategy as ASTERISK but with big tower PC housing.

Iīll look for the WWW adresses and send tell you where you can get more info about these systems.

CD-ROM tutorial disk?? Well, I offer such a CD: includes VST Midi and Audio tutorial (shit, at the moment only German version), lots of free VST PlugIns (oh, I count over 45 PlugIns now, for free!!), Share-, Free, and Demoware tools (VST, Rebirth as demo too, AWAVE, scope, hammerhead, and so on...... really good archive) and about 300 very good Midi songs.

If you are interested I can send you the table of contents of this CD.

Ciao ..... donīt loose your hairs :-))

well there ya go,,,, I'm too bloody lazy to read the info properly i guess huh?... preroll.... blimey... who'd have thought it?!!..... it seems to run ok so far now...even with the tahiti although it looses the audio alot...... VST seems to hate the Cake-7 reverb on my machine... maybe it's to do with the registration of the directories, or maybe it's something else, but it slows the screen down to a total crawl... also, that Timeworks reverb is garbage to my ears... the Wunderverb is far better..... when i run the timeworks it sounds like someone shaking rice in a coke-can over the reverb sound... is it like that for you?.... weird... oh well, i'll get a P2 now I reckon with a Gina or DSP1624... price is higher than anticipated tho from the ad's i've seen...shame...

.... some VST effects are not so good :-(

but there are some good ones as freeware out there in WWW

The reverbs from WAVES are much better...but Wunderverb works not so bad too.

Actually I have a collection of 47 freeware PlugIns.
Do you know XChorus?

See my homepage (http://home.t-online.de/home/Clemens.Kurtz/). There are some good links to Cubase VST related sites (see my HP, menu Midi-Help)

Ciao
