i just got done tracking all my instruments into cakewalk 9, should i normalize each track before i go any further?

I have a friend thats an engineer, and he once mentioned something about when not to normalize but I cant remember enough to pass that info on. sorry

Do not normalize 100%, cus equipment such a CD Walkmans etc have slightly poor DAC's. Normalizing to 100% will invariably cause distortion on the average Digital-Analog Converters, like walkmans etc..
I really don't normalize my vibes, becuase I record as hot as I can get the signal. I'm all digital after the 1/4" jacks on the desk, so I need to capture every bit I can for a nice resolution.
If -you- mix it as hot as you can get it, Volume->EQ->Compress (IF you need it) I'm quite sure you will find you audio editors' meters near 0.7 ~ 0.3 or higher.
If you really care about a nice loud finnish, check out Waves UltraMaximizer (L1) software. But use this only after you perfected to raw mix.
