OK SO WHAT IS THE SECRET OF THE BASS DRUM, BASS DRUMS ON MODULES LIKE THE ORBIT HAVE TO MUCH BASS END SO YOU EQ IT OFF BUT THIS SEEMS NOT QUITE RIGHT, COMPRESS IT OK LITTLE BIT BETTER BUT IT SEEMS THE PROFFESSINALS HAVE MORE EQ OVER THE LOW END THAN SIMPLY LOW, SWEEPABLE MID, AND HIGH, ANY SENSIBLE ANSWERS GET POSTING , YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN THE BIG BOYS GET PUNCHY BASSY BALANCED KICKS THAT DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE BASS LINE .

STOP SHOUTING!

Figure out what's holding down the bottom. What's your lowest low? If you've got a kick with a lot of subsonics, don't be puttin a bass sound with a bunch of 40-80 Hz stuff down there, too. That'll give you mud. Pick a sound that centers in the low hundreds for the bass patch. And roll that frequency out of the kick.

If you've got a reggae/dub or jungle bass, don't use a pitched down 808/909 sound for the kick. Something's already there. Find a snappy kick sound, roll off the lowest lows, add some 2.5-4 kHz and some 10-12 kHz to give it some click. This can be done with the board eq you described. Or you could insert an outboard unit. You'll need to utilize individual outputs from the module, if available, or be able to give each sound its own pass through the recorder, which might present sync issues. Otherwise, these adjustments will screw with your other sounds.

I don't compress modules and synths nearly as much as live instruments. Bass guitars generally need squished pretty hard to smooth out the performance. And kicks need compression to make 'em stand out and gating to tighten 'em up.

Oh, and beware of the 250-400 Hz range (cut it) unless you want your kick to sound like a bad bar band.

something with steep slope, like a 1/3 octave graphic, you need to knock out the lower bottom and other frequencies to taste and keep the rest, the slope on a mixer eq is too broad unless it's parametric, but still, a graphic would be best, or do it in s/w
