last night i was sitting down writing some drum stuff and i thought to myself...i should really start listening to more jazz drummers. cause it seems like every other day something i use is used all the time in jazz stuff. and i think i should learn something a bout it. so does anyone know what jazz drummers are worth listening to.

Check out Chuck Magione's drummer. Don't remeber his name, but you can hear his solos on pretty much everyone of Chuck'trax. He is amazing.

Jack DeJohnette(not sure about spelling)Elvin Jones(I think that's his last name he's wicked w/ the brushes),I could have named more if you didn't put me on the spot.Go pick up a copy of Modern Drummer and look in the areas which sell the method tapes and you'll find more. You could spend your entire life listening to Jack though he's got to be the most forward looking drummer on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The one you should definitelly check out is Tony Williams - i consider him to be the best drummer that have ever lived. The most intense, crazy and imaginative drumming. you could start with Miles Davis quintet albums from the 60's.

I personally think David Weckl sucks. Not only he's not really a jazz drummer (more like fusion), he's just pure techniqe, sounds like a... er... drum machine ;)

Even in fusion drums, you can get a lot of guys more soulful than Weckl. Peter Erskine and Billy Cobham come to mind. I second DeJohnette. And Jones. And Mason. And Williams. Others to consider: Ed Blackwell, Art Blakey, Max Roach & Philly Joe Jones. Check the Art Ensemble of Chicago for a tribal spin on jazz drumming and percussion. And although I'm not real fond of the type of jazz he appears on, Steve Gadd is a very in-the-pocket guy. Not exhaustive, but what I could scrape outta me brainpan.

Didn't know there was anything but technique in drums. But damballah your talking about guys who have been around a lot longer than baby dave. Anyway, everyone all hold Buddy Rich as the best drummer that ever lived. Heh, heh, I met Louie Belsome in a club, nice gent.

Of course there is more than technique to drumming - percusion instrument are all about expressiveness!
Oh, Ed Blackwell is absolutely great.
From the more contemprorary drummers, I really like Joey Baron, who plays with John Zorn and the Knitting Factory gang.

Bernard Purdy and Leon Parker...both smoking drummers...Leon Parker is more recent, but really innovative...he plays a really stripped down kit but gets lots of crazy textures out of it. He's got this crazy version of Epistrophy on this album "Above and Below".

Bernard Purdy I first heard on this album called "King Curtis Live" - really really good funk drummer.
