I am quite new to producing tunes (i have been a DJ for 8 years) and i found it difficult to get the feel of production but i have finally started to make some good sounding drums, snares, claps, hats & b-line.

I am just having real trouble creating a useable melody loop.

I like tech-progressive so its not like a euro-trance breakdown i am trying to create more "strange" noises like TIMO MAAS - UBIK etc...

Has anyone got any tips on creating nice melody's? Making strings\pads feel softer etc..

Any help would be appreciated :D

cheers

Cheap tricks don't work in this one. You more or less require a good knowledge of musical theory, some playing skills, musican talent and general understanding of how different melodies work with eachother and with the rhythm section.

In other words, just bang the keyboard until it sounds good.

basic theory can help a lot, as can improvising a lot until you find something nice

agreed - i know practise is a big key and understanding your equipment but like aaron says basic theory is critical.

i dont come froma musical background (other than i have been DJ'in for 8 years) so any pointers or links to good websites would be grealty appreciated.
