Mine is good ol' natural minor. I also like that one that goes C-D-E-F#-A#-A#-C. What's that one called?

My favorite is this funk scale (I don't know the real name but everything you play sounds really funky with it). C-D-D#-F-F#-G-A#-C

Other than that, normal minor and major scales are what I use the most.

Hi,

This is my fav, I don't use it much. Maby in a little part of a track. But I think it's kool.

It's called octonical... I think??

Do a leap on all the keys in this scale from up to down. Sounds kinda movie like, huh?

Laters,

Happy-P-Man.

C blues'd be C-D#-F-F#-G-A#-C wouldn't it. Just for jammin', something like that over Eb works OK I guess. I like playing mixolydian rather than ionic, too, with that flatted 7th. Nicer than M7 to me.

This is one of my favorites from a raga called Puriya. Skip the tonic ascending (in this case C). I put C at the top of the scale just so you can see it's part of it but you'd hop from B to D flat and then down the 1/2 step to C. I used this scale in a track once. Nice.

I think this is like the mixalaydian or one of those Ionian or something . I found it by ear. It's sort of a Harmonic and melodic minor. What ever it is. you take a major and lowerr the 3, 6, and 7. I do the same changes to all my scales and they sound dark. Scale is not more important than the chord changes. they change the style as well, like 1,4,5 in classical or 12 bar blues chord changes, or 32 bar standard jazz etc.

like this? that's straight aeolian, which is just a minor scale, in this case c minor.

aw, fuck didn't tick the box, hence no scale

the aeolian or natural minor's on the left.

the melodic minor changes depending on if your going up or down. the descending part is the natural minor (left side). the right side is the ascending part, with a raised 6th and 7th. yippee.

harmonic minor raises the 7th a half step (so there's a step and a half between 6th & 7th). this avoids a minor V chord.

The only difference between the melodic minor and the major scale is the flattened 3rd.The Harmonic minor has a flat 3rd and a flat 6th and the Ĉolian/natural minor has a flat 3rd,flat 6th and a flat 7th.Imo (Brett B) scales are vital to understanding harmony all chords are built from scales and in order to understand harmony/chord construction you need to know scales. Both the Melodic and Harmonic minor scales give you 2 minor,2 major and 2 diminished triads plus one augmented triad whereas both the Major scale and the Natural minor scale give you 1 diminished triad,3 minor triads and 3 major triads.Personally I think the Harmonic and Melodic minor scales give you more harmonic possibilities but what the fuck do I know?

This is what i meant, take a mojor scale and lower the 3,6,7 notes melodic and harmonic are ignored. I forgot to check the add key thing too.

It would be good if Kilo could come up with a better keyboard diagram the black keys being the same length as the white keys is quite confusing to the eyes(well my eyes anyway) a musical staff would be good too.

Pete,
That's a pretty cool little mode you got going there. I don't know that this series has a name, but it's fun. The b5, is really used quite a bit. The M7 is more of a passing tone, but it's thrown in there for fun voicings. Occasionly I'll throw a M3 in for modulating to a different key. Funny, I hardly talk about this stuff and forget that I use it. I'm not ticking the M7 or the M3 but I do use them in passing. Fun stuff.

it's the N. Indian "Thath" scale system, which
basically uses diff. combinations of b2, 3, 6, 7
and #4. Some wild shit you can get out of that
stuff. It's slowed down my writing though, I've
been doing a lot more "experimenting." The
newest track on my page "Xeno" uses a scale
from the Thath system, and also uses some
african polyrhthmic techniques in the
melodies (2 on 3 on 5 on 6 on 7). The RM1X
is a godsend for doing stuff like that...

Peaceout,

Peter

Debussy, that's the Expressionist, right?
He use eastern scales too, does any1 know more about this guy, I'm
thinking of digging around getting some of his works and learning them because the idea of trying to take ideas from a painting (or scene) and apply them to music is very
interesting.

I mean Debussy was an impressionist.

Bugger, I've never had this problem till I was with a friend and this girl (studying arts) said one of us was an impressionist and the other was an expressionist and it stuck in my goddam head, and now I get the two confused
