in the old days (back in 1998) me and my buddy got signed to puny podunk indi label to produce drum n bass and we did a cd it was fun.
now jump forward to 2001. i have some tracks i want to shop to labels. not for cd, not for big record deals etc. i just want to shop out singles for sale.
whats the process? it seems like there are a million sites out there to promote music but no one putting out singles (at least the kind sold in the record stores) are on these sites.
so with all the technology etc... i guess the best way to go about this is the same way i did it before the internet? just to mail demos out to the a&r guys at labels i like?
i guess theres winter music but that stuff makes me ill.
most of the people getting tracks signed know someone. i don't know anyone. :-)

ps- oh yah, indie releases other that short run cdr are not an option.. i don't have time to write music and hustle my vinyls to record shops.

I would think that finding DJs would be a good way. but then sending good ol CDrs might be an idea, although it aint workin for me
but then again, having connects isnt fucking working either so I dont know what to tell ya except good fuckin luck

Truth is I'm attempting this for the first time now and the route I'm taking is I first let the stores hear it and a handful definitely want some copies. Remember, they don't do anything to promote it so I think to make it stand out on the shelf next to the million other singles is to get some club resident DJs to put it into rotation. If you have the rare luck of having radio that plays independant dance music (public, college, pirate etc) I would definitely get the CDR copies moving to those guys in hopes of getting some exposure that way too.
Of course you could also put posters on bus benches or play live all over the place but that's not always practical stuff...
I'm no pro but I'll be doing the first things and I hope it works for me.
