I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

on the 1642, it has 8 mono channels and 4 stereo channels, and also has 4 subgroup sends but with 8 possible switchable ouputs- so this mixer could feed an 8 track from those 8 sub-group send on a permenent attached loom etc to the 8 track 8 in's... also the stereo channels would be space saving for stereo synths and other sources and they have a non-sweep mid eq and instead have a 4 band fixed eq.... i'd say that mixer is targeted at home studio and studio suite composers looking for synth and line inputs, less mic in's and more subgroup sends...
so that's the beef basicaly & personaly for pc work i'd plump for the 1604 Live desk and get all the 16 channels with sweep eq - the 4 sub-groups can feed up to 4 PC soundcard inputs if that is enuff simultaneous records for your PC system then fine. Also it does all those optionable positions for the rear connector pod
If i had an 8 track guitar vocals & midi backing arrangements & drums etc type studio space i'd get the 1642
