Yulp, me & marianimal finally got our demo CD done! It's 7 all live tracks- recorded here in the SF Bay area at the Hush Hush Lounge, Light, and er, my basement! The demo is just somefin to give to promoters, club owners, etc. Yes, yes, please do laugh at the headshot ;-)

Anyway this track is called 'Cannot Repeat.' Say what you want about the track, but don't bother mentioning EQ/levels/mastering, etc- it's recorded live! Bassline is real subby and got mostly lost in the encoding- hey turn it up for me on your stereo willya?

First in a series...cheers for listening if you do.

o doh, you did this live! So it isn't studio
excellent.

I would get some effects on that voice... like
some crazy delay with a subtle verb. definitley
will open the mix up.

cheers!

couldn't vote for it when i d/l'ed earlier.. the vibe totally clashed with where i needed to be to work on my stuff, but i gotta go to work now so i can listen and i'm loving it. marianne's voice does sound shrill on the mp3, but hearing past the mp3 it sounds pretty rich. the organ patch does make me want to hear a cheesy loungy solo with loads of flams and accidentals or whatever, but i know what it takes to get there.. i ain't there yet. nice song, guys.

sub? i can here it good on my absolute 2s. maybe have another bass sound higher, syncopated with the sub? (more gaps in sub line?) organ, is that you live? get a tighter sound, bit too much cheese maybe (sorry) guitar sound on intro is right. more verb on vox? tho live you don't need so much. and use more kicks ie 3 different ones specially different sound on the kick roll. check out grant nelson site for cool samples, hold on are they here as well?

all good.   dunno what everyone else is on about with the vocal, compression maybe? more in ya face needed?

yeah, good job. I second the call for a few differnt kicks. I have an XP-50 too--try sending the organ patch through the crappy internal compressor and with the gain at +6 and cutting both highs and lows a little bit. I think this sound would be great with some live bass too, but I'm not saying it needed it. since marianimal's voice is the pretty, anglo type, I think that a little more dirt on the drum sounds might be a nice contrast. good job.

Third the kicks and think she has a great voice, second the delays for it too though.

Wow you guys! OK- diff. kick sound for the breaks- got it! Never even considered it. But listening to more and more ukgarage, yeah, they vary that shit don't they.

vox wise, there is a bit of subtle delay on there but you can't here it here. Compression is still something I'm working out- right now I'm using a 3630 just as a limiter- cuts down on the feedback big-time. Vox sound a tad dull b/c I always roll-off the highs on Marianne's mic, again, to prevent feedback.

getting good live vocals is one of our biggest technical challenges- most clubs/dj bars have speakers flown up EVERYWHERE...it'll just be trial&error for a while I'm sure.

Dude, you guys are awesome! Even when you say it's cheesy, that's great! thanks for the xp50 tips knowa- I'm sure marianimal will be interested.

what should we post up next Marianne?

actually, i bequest you to start singing b/g brad or face a future of meaningless empty overgrown parking lots stretching to infinity and only ever soggy cardboard boxes for dinner with no bugs and a distant crow you never see. i really hope you can't carry a tune.. there's nothing quite so enchanting as an on-key female lead singer and an off-key male producer on b/g. it's deep, brad. and you only have to say the major words. don't make me show you and get out my american vietnamese new wave tapes, cos i won't.. they're falling to pieces :|

I HATE VOCALS IN "DANCE" MUSIC

that said, I think its a cool song. voice DEFINITELY needs some verb, delay, fx and to come back a bit. I know its live and not engineered but maybe you two otta look at something like the digitech vocalist or the like to achieve this

hey panama..did you even READ the first post? Id say brad made it pretty damn clear that he wasnt looking for "mix" advice:

"but don't bother mentioning EQ/levels/mastering, etc- it's recorded live"

bleaahhhhh!

nice shuffly one, Brad. Cant say I know much about "garidge" but it sounds cool to me

hehe...dont take the "no vocals" thing personally M. Im just one of those people that is into the idea of one or two people geeking out in, eliminating the "rock" element (words, guitar leads, etc) but thats not a criticism more of a preference

No worries, Influx, I knew you hated vox & I wasn't expecting to convert you. Yeah, the solo does come across as cheesy, notewise & patchwise, def time to attend to that matter. Tanx tons for all the suggestions.

OK got "Right Time" up. Downtempo, with plenty of delay all on the vox for y'all.

xoxos- yeah, got a second mic and mic-stand for me. Now just gotta learn to sing in other places besides the car&shower.

Just added "Electro." Marianne sings traditional Indian Raga over some big booty electro beats! A crowd fave..she could tell ya more about the Raga part than me- I don't even know if I'm spelling it right.

Slapback delay on the vox boys, but you know, you f*cking can't hear it! Blame it on the MP3 Brad, sure...;-)

It gets crazy at the end. I take off my shirt and belly dance, oh wait, you can't see that unless you come to the show, nyuk nyuk.

fucking influx!! no no no i didn't say the solo *was* cheesy, i said it *should be* ie. with a rotary speed-up swell and a bunch of chromatic scaling, like the classic stuff, tho i regret assuming that because you didn't play one like that, you can't. well, i know i can't, so maybe you shouldn't. maybe bedwyr can play one of those. it's a cross between that and 'one of those old time songs' by leonard hall. bedwyr can you redo 'coch' in yamaha 4op 'honkeytonk.'

agreeing.. thinking an excessively wet sound would work well for electro vocals.. over-the-top diva house chorus with subtle panning band pass delays.

glad to hear you're in on the b/g vocals.. if you can make them extra-whiny and off-key like you're always cracking up and do a bit of 'woah' and 'yeah' it'd be magical.

don't like this one so much   dunno why, backing's a bit 'messy' maybe? ... i'll have another listen late at night

m, playing's not cheesy, just the sound (a bit)

xoxos, no dx h/w, i'll have a look at rainbow synth vsti, might have to ask questions about programming tho (too late now anyway, maybe i should post before delivering).

Hey B, remember we changed the title on the electro tune? It's called Kafi, which isn't much cleverer but it tells you which raga you're in.

I would love to be able to play like Jimmy Smith, who I don't think is cheesy at all, but I'm not there yet. As for over-the-top diva vox, hm, just not what I'm going for (or capable of, with respect to those who are) but maybe those fx would sound cool anyway. I'd also love to do something like what A Guy Called Gerald did with the woman's vox in "Voodoo Ray", which came up in another thread recently. She's like a lead synth, but not in your face. We're also experimenting more with sampling the vox and manipulating them, cos you know, I like buttons & knobs too.

oh yeah xoxos? well..NYEAH!!!

I didnt say anything about any "cheeze" factor in this song...I dont see it that way. 'sides..the stuff Ive heard..with the pitched up vocals and shit...pretty cheesy. At least M's voice is real!

I listened to "Kafi" too...

OK now that things btwn influx&xoxos have cooled off, I just put up "Love Radical." I think you'll be pleasantly suprised if you like hip-hop beats, slap bass, and out-of-contol synth solos.

This was recorded live in San Francisco. I was not wearing underwear that nite and I think it really helped...oops nevermind, sorry. Just check out the track if ya got a minute.

fucking brad. that is one sweet synth solo guys!

see if you can get one of those nice pleated catholic school girl skirts. that's really good for live. oh and try looking in a thrift store or something.. it doesn't need to be one that's on the girl.

love the mad synth, not so keen on the staccato rhythm, i'm hanging for double time hihat, not all the time just in bits   like the sparse mix, i would have been too tempted to use a pad to fill it out. hey, maybe make the rhythm as mad as the synth, just a thought (make the rhythm as mad as the mad synth so it doesn't seem so out of place) (can i say mad some more? mad mad) been said before - marian, your vocal is well anglo/folk? juxtaposition (big word) with hard/mad rhythm/sounds would work imho

one thing i don't like (sorry) is the timestretching outro   it does work with the staccato rhythm though, like the rhythm always sounds like it's slowing down, in a good way. keep it up!

Love Radical, nice funky beat. Didn't quite get the arpsynth that came in just before 2:00. Sounded like it represents a modulation? I like the sound of her voice. Nice quality. Funny how the delay on the snare becomes so pronounced when the song slows.

Electro Kafi, there's a popular raga in Indian music called Kafi..same spelling. I dig this more. I like when when the bass comes in. Damn I just realized she is singing Indian solfeggio and style. Hah! She studied Indian music some. Cool. I didn't hear her use Shuddh Gandhar, only Komal Gandhar. Or maybe she did. It's hard to tell in this live session. In any case I like this track and the sounds in it more. Tell her I said well done....not that it matters what the hell I think but it's nice when someone understands whatever it is someone else is doing and appreciates it. Unless that's your voice Brad :P

Comments much appreciated from all. Sitar, the shuddh Ga comes in in only one phrase that repeats 2x: G m n D P m g R. Maybe it would be nice to use it more, it's a lovely note.

Hm, anglo folk juxtaposed with hard mad rhythm. I'm intrigued by this suggestion but if I try to imagine Sandy Denny blasting through a sound system it sounds all wrong. Any examples?

I do indeed have a pleated Catholic girl skirt, but I think the waist is a bit small for Brad. He'd have to leave it undone and wear suspenders.

Think they've all just about covered it

Love Radical is my favourite one. Love that bo bo be dip noise. Hmmm, well I know what I mean.

I'm a bit sick of the sound of garage now that we are getting all the commercial stuff in the UK. Must be a London thing.

Photos of me in a kilt going for a reasonable price?
