Okay, someone tell me about rhythms used in tribal African (and other places, like India) drum music. Paticularly, the types of rhythms being played. From what I know it's just basically the same as many ostinato patterns, but sorta on steroids. I know it's polymetric. Is each pattern centered around one specific sound, or are the patterns like multiple hand-drummers at once?

i got a tabla player coming to stay in april, so i'll know more then. african rhythms are basically very simple patterns played by everyone at the same time, so it sounds complicated, know what i mean? i'd have to look up ostinato in my music dictionary tho...

sitar will know something on this.
