Hello K,

I was wondering, would it be possible to have another category in the GENRE/FLAVA section? Something like Dance/New Age Crossover or some such thing. Then all us odd bods who are doing something that's not pure dance music, but still falls within the bounds of it would have a section of our own.

I can't be the only one who's constantly encountering a problem when it comes to deciding which flava to list my tracks in. I'm opting for Techno or Ambient most of the time, but it's not really satisfactory. Another section would make a great site even better.

What should I do then K? Put it to a vote? You're in charge, so ultimately the decision is yours anyway.

use looser interpretations of the headers, ie. imho techno is anything concerning technology or technique, raw songs is a good one, as is new jazz.. every track i've heard by you i'd happily apply to any of these genres

is this an abuse of the genre system?

Chillout could be useful or Ambient something or other. There was one category I suggested in a post some time ago but I don't remember what it was. Guess it's not that important.

actualy, when I get time, i'm building a delimiter to re-set everyones FLAVA settings - there is TOO many FLAVA's - i wnt to prune it down so the delimoter will parse everyones FLAVA settings and reset any ones we change to a new one

for example i think 2 Trance genre's is fine - club-trance & classic-trance ?

i dunno, and only one for house ?.. mebbe it's not worth it, or mebbe i just need to organise the FLAVA's drop-down list to display the genre's in order, but they are not in order in the database cos I didnt crate them all one after the other putting all 'house' genre's one after the other... so i should really hard code it in order so all the 'trance' genre's are stacked with each other & all house & techno etc...

anyways you guys decide on the new genre, it's nowt to do with me, i'll add it when you decide.

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws, they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws. The guys have to team up with Jaws to get Bigger Jaws.... I call it... Big Jaws!!!

Okay Damballah and Moujik, so you don't like what I do. Well I don't like what you do much either.
So that makes us all as narrow minded as each other.

I suggested the idea of another category because I thought with all the genre's that are already there another one was needed to cover stuff that doesn't quite fit into those flavas. But I agree with K, there are too many, so if he's going to prune it down, perhaps it doesn't matter.

"airy-fairy" refers to something from before you got here, apparently, and has nothing to do with your tunes. just a genre suggestion.

'airy-fairy' gets my vote for sure.

whatever, just strip it down to the most basic descriptions - house, techno, trance, blah blah blah.

Im with steve

too many people think theyre doing something special and need some 5 levels down sub-genre

nonsense

yeah. techno, house, breaks, Drum N Bass, Ambient, Downtempo

if you cant fit into that, well...

My apologies Damballah. And influx, I don't think I'm doing anything special, I'm just doing what comes naturally to me. So let's just stick with the genres as they are, you've obviously all got closed minds to any change.

But I did like Brett B's suggestion "downtempo/experimental".

go ahead. pout more. I wasnt directing my comment at you specifically, but you seem to have the normal artistic syndrome and think that it all relates to you, so...

I can't help ya there. Calling us closed minded is a bit farcical tho, innit?

what? no dub! you're fucking slighting me you SoCal bastard!

mebbe if the genres were tree-like. the microvarieties of house & trance make my head spin, but they're useful to some, I'm sure. but people could just call it trance and stick the prog, goa, psy, candyraver, madagascar-stylee or whatever in their track description and then explain how it all relates how to the great horned one possessed their game console or sumpin. seen?

I think I may have sounded meaner than I meant to you yesterday. It was a case of a "bad day at the office" so to speak. So to everyone I offended, I apologise.

But listen influx, what's wrong with you man? Just when I think I've got the measure of you - that you're self opinionated and like laying the law down, you turn round and give some friendly advice, and I think maybe you're not so bad after all. Then you turn round and start snapping peoples heads off again.

cloud, it's just this funny way of interacting, you can't see peoples faces or hear their tone of voice so sometimes it's easy to read something the wrong way.

then again, i like reading things the wrong way.

Influx, you didn't snap anybodys head off here. But look at the way you've been going on with Brett B, in the 9/11 thread. I mean what's the point? You two are never gonna see eye to eye. He's obviously obsessed with being commercially successful, and you're not. He seems to believe in Republican political policies, and you don't
(I agree with you about both btw). So why don't just agree to disagree and let it go.

And Bedwyr, you may well be right. This is a bloody odd way of communicating with people.

COMMERCIALISM IS THE DEATH OF CREATIVITY.

Because in BRETT B's case he goes around spouting shit as if he is some scholar and he is clearly BLIND

I know I will never even half-convince him of how full of shit he is, especially using the in your face crap that I am known for, but I cant sit there and let someone say the things he says and just keep my mouth shut. I just can not do it and that will never change

each and ever sentence in his last few posts is a GEM. I was tempted to clean it all up and print it out and post it on my frig as a reminder of why I hate lemmings so much. and its gone way beyond disliking commerciality. Stances like his allow the "man" (ahhh such a stupid term) to maintain power, and that is unacceptable.

we are being phased out, it seems, every last one of us that doesnt buy buy buy buy buy, and people like brett with his "get with the program" dogma ENCOURAGE that shit

sorry. hijack. you asked;)

Influx, you are 100% spot on. A lot of people spout bullshit, and Mr Barnes appears to be an expert at it. I've got nothing against him, I don't even know him, but anyone who thinks dubya is okay needs their brains seeing to in my book.

I've got nothing against you either, in fact I admire you for speaking your mind, regardless of what I previously said.

I'm just trying to be the Devils Advocate here. We're all interacting in cyberspace, it's not likely any of us are ever going to meet face to face and we can all argue until we go to Kingdom Come. But at the end of the day, nothing's going to change. You'll still hold your opinions, and he'll still believe in his. And if he want's to go round spouting bullshit, nothing's going to stop him short of banning him from the website.

Anyway, I thought this was supposed to be a music forum? We're going way of course.

I think bringing things down to 5 or 6 like Influx said is a good idea. I'd have a higher percentage shot at guessing what my tracks are. Right now it's like hitting the lotto.

it's because brett needs to feel like someone cares while he grates on about all the gear he doesn't have as if it meant anything to anybody else anyway.

and it's influx's need to grate on about what brett's messing on to fulfill the aforementioned need for care.

it's like a play, they recite 'i am hungry,' 'i will feed you' and so it is seen and recognised, the jewel of the community.

i just want to hear some music that isn't like 'you're getting sleepy, buy all my albums.'

yeah well that's why most forums ban arguements about politic's or religion... mebbe we should re-open the slaggit room and ship this stuff out cos I wonder sometimes wether the continual fighting & bitching puts people off becoming regulars. Then again... 1/2 of me likes a free forum, cos lets face it most forums seen as 'successful' are 90% full of 'Audity crackles & pops with VST! - HELP!!' - OR - 'SBlive with Logic audio - HELP!' - etc ad-nauseum

The official Cubase forum is one example - talk about boring!... but then they sorta banned all other discussion to some far flung corner where it ceases to be a forum and becomes some sort of members club.

I like ppl. fighting, it's fun to read. In high school, I always enjoyed cafeteria fights, hallway fights, afterschool fights...er, I mean I enjoyed watching them! What can I say, I'm a rubberneck.

Um, yeah, there's no dub section is there? I like to make dub tracks after I watch a good fight, har har.

Airy fairy- hee hee! Jaswho? is still all sensitive about that one- right J???

To summarize, I think DT needs more fights, more rubbernecks, more dub, more cafeterias, and for sure more airy fairies!

Sometimes we do get carried away and I wonder too if some valuable potential members that don't understand the bigger picture here go away. But musicians are passionate people and concerned about human issues. What to do? Dancetech is special. Maybe the slaggit forum should make a reappearance with the link to it in the list of forums so it's easy to get to in a pinch.

well thanks for backing up 'hallway riot' with your own juvie tune since the whole idea was for a electro juvenile delinquency comp anyway.. come on, man! would that be a rockin' disc or what? didn't you ever do anything bad? "her name was a-lisa, uhuh, uhuh.."

jewel of the community k. thanks for all the tolerance and letting people learn stuff on their own via the results of their actions/natural system mechanics. plus i couldn't disguise my own operations anywhere else :p

and thanks to brett and influx for getting up here and doing it every day. it's like the wild west.. or.. some place that's got a half decent bit of vitality left to it (saying something there.) if any dance music forum is ever going to mean shit, it's going to be this one.

my ultimate opinion on genres: i did not create them, therefore they are nothing

and just to end my little love letter, with any luck i've only got a few weeks to go until i can bust on the 1 gig processor (with any luck) and finally get tight midi timing, THEN we're going to see who can make some snotty bloody derisive remixes of other people's tunes. so i'd appreciate it if you'd not run off sensoniq in the meanwhile.. cos i'll be wanting someone who can keep up with me when the time comes, mr. carson :p

okay, okay, no one's riled up or excited? i'll go and do the dishes then.

maybe i have to do the dishes, i'm going to a comedy club tonight and there's this girl i met who plays the harp going too. how do you mic up a harp? of course, i'm only interested in her plucking.

genres? new blend? hmm?

really? like I could chase anyone off! nyah nyah.

oh god! this new wavish band I mixed circa '86 had the bright idea of having a harp player join them for a couple of songs one night. they had a simmons drum kit and some yammy qx thing running an rx something and a rack of tx somethings, a dx7, all which had to come through the monitors pretty loud, as well as guitar & bass & what passed for singing. all the mikes we had were cardioid dynamics -- 57s, 58s and a couple EVs. we couldn't get that harp miked for shit. what a nightmare. anyway, happy plucking.

I'm up for some high-tech teen car-crash songs just as soon as I build a new computer. my old celery's startin' to act like a dog. I'll have to think of a new name, though. :P

its real cool that this site is not censored. when someone asks an intelligent "how do I " question, there are usually a lot of good replies--it's not like the (inevitable) flame wars prevent music relevant stuff. I was able to ask a Mac VS PC question here and get a lot of useful information without anyone going crazy; that's a pretty remarkable achievement by most forum standards. big hug.
