Original Message 1/4 11-Apr-02 @ 10:00 PM - the sad truth...
BUT. I love the sound. I have no intention of loosing the wonderful sounds that i've developed for my Q. the sound on that thing is unmatched. I can't let that go... So, the next question is... what do i get instead? A Q-rack or a micro-Q? What im most concerned with here is the sound engine. It's got to sound as good as the Q, which is why im somewhat apprehensious towards the micro-Q. but the q-rack has the sequencer and all that which i don't really use. i also use the extra filter-types on the Q (like the ppg) which i know the micro doesnt have.
I guess im looking for people's opinions from those who have heard or used both.
thanks ahead for any help....

There are several limitations: No PPG-Filter, no filter morphing, less FX power (FX1 only for the first 4 parts of a multi plus one global Reverb or Delay)
Your patches may sound different if you transfer them from Q to microQ.
Boele Gerkes and Till Kopper, who did the main work for the Q/µQ-Usersoundset from the Waldorf Mail-Forum told me that they hat a lot of work with finetuning of the sounds to make them sound similar betwenn Q and µQ

When I checked the current status of the FAQ I found that this point is
missing/blank:
How to make Q(r) sounds work on a mQ(k)?
I wrote something lately and put some additions to it:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In many cases sounds can be converted directly from the Q to the mQ and vice
verca. Often sounds work right away. Sometimes the sounds are slightly
different, sometimes they might sound totally useless. The strangest
difference happens when AltWaves are used. But with a few tweaks you can
turn these hopelessly "useless" sounds into something gorgious again :-)
Please keep in mind that all the mentioned below *can* but does not *have*
to impact a sound. You will get good conversion results in many cases
without tweaking anything. The list below is a hint and a help if you want
to dig deeper into this sound conversion thing:
- Raw oscillators sound different. (Q sounds brighter, crispier,
more powerful in some cases)
solution: no direct remedy, a workaround is to use different filter
settings to compensate this behaviour
- Wavetables seem to sound very different. Even without modulation it sounds
different with the same PW settings.
solution: did not investigate further but I did not find a solution (any
ideas?)
- Wavetable modulation sounds totally different. In fact if you have a sound
with Alt Waves used it sounds like a "wobble" on the Q. (i.e. Create a patch
with Alt2, PW=78, WTM=31 on mQ. WTM needs to be 02 on the Q to sound similar
to 31 on the mQ)
solution: lower WTM a lot! Did not find a formula for that - has to be done
manualy by listening but I always came closer when setting it to something
between +1 to +3 only.
- Combfilter(-) sounds very, very different (generaly I would say the mQ
comb sounds brighter, crispier, more powerful, while the Q comb sounds
damped - at least much more bass in the Q combfilter)
solution: no remedy found, came closer when lowering cutoff or tried
Comb(+) instead which also changes the character of the sound
- Combfilter(+) sometimes gives very high bleeps on the Q (above 16 kHz)
which makes the sound almost useless and even with a following LP filter it
sounds totally different from the mQ
solution: lower cutoff at combfilter(+) and lower cutoff at a LP filter (if
serial routing) on Q - still the result is not close to mQ but at least the
bleeps are gone
- OSC FM amount seems to be scaled different
solution: lower or half the amount on the Q
- FX: Reverb needs scale adaption (20m in mQ -> 30m in Q), Delay sounds
"slower" in Q (did not investigate further)
