Nord I/II is a 2 osc synth, 1 filter, no effects, 1 FM algorithm.
Nord III is a 2 osc synth, but it includes an additional "sync" osc per main oscillator. Much more extensive FM, in fact the synth is designed as a sort of analog FM synth. A pair of filters per voice, that sound somewhat different than the filters in the older NLs. A bit more generic sounding, is how I'd classify them. It has effects.
A nord Lead II is a pure analog machine. An NL3 is more of a hybrid. Personally, I didn't care much for the NL3. I thought it lost a lot of the distinctiveness of the NL1/NL2. It's not as raw, for sure, not as cutting.
Like I said make sure you play both. I love my Nord I to death. It's a fantastic instrument, an instant classic. The NL3 didn't impress me the same way.

Nords are seriously underrated around here, but I think they are still the best sounding VA.

matter of fact the sound is very similar to a modular.
the presets are all set to do stupid fm piano crap so if thats all you listen to at the store you will be disappointed.
turn off the distortion, chorus, and only use the 1st bank of filters it will sound just like a 2.

Perhaps it doesn't have that 'raw' edge, but that's not necessarily what everybody's after.
The presets veer towards the FM side of things, but I've had some pretty *dirty* sounds out of it.
The user interface is one of the best I've used. Dead easy to knock together new patches - much quicker than say my Supernova2, but perhaps not as comprehensive in the mod matrix end of things. on the NL3, you pick the destination for the mod source. On most of my other kit, you choose which mod source you want to affect the parameter you're dealing with (a la Supernova2).
Depends what you want from the machine I guess.

I have one of them little micro modular's, just so i could have a bit of the nord sound in my tracks (i used one in college and fell in love). The bugger is hard to program but i love it (just like i do my supernova). I was also thinking of getting a lead 2 key's (used), but i can get an oberheim OB-12 with about the same amount of knobs as the lead 3's for the same price. Handy for soft synths/samplers.
it's so competitive i could go on for hours

I would stick to the Lead2 ... it's a classic. And the sounds are just amazing... no need for effects, just leave it raw.
